Why not build your own Climbing Wall? - Digital Life at Digi 2005

If you love adventure, chances are that you have tried out numerous activities that get your heart racing. Some of these might include bungee jumping, sky diving, parachuting, river rafting, abseiling and rock climbing. If you are especially fond of the latter, this article will present you with a good idea. How would you like to have your own climbing wall? Among all the adventure sports mentioned above, rock climbing is actually the easiest to experience in the comfort of your own premises by means of constructing your own climbing wall.

You will most probably think that putting together your own climbing wall is quite difficult. However, you will be surprised to learn that the opposite is actually true. It also does not matter if you do not have much experience in building things; you do not have to be a builder or an artisan by occupation in order to construct a climbing wall. It might be of great help though to have someone with a building background gives you some pointers along the way.

Before the actual building can commence, you need to identify a space somewhere on your premises that will be best suited for the climbing wall. Be it indoors or outdoors, it does not really matter, although it would be nice to still be able to use it even when the weather conditions are quite rough outside. Most people who have built their own climbing walls usually transform their garages or spare rooms into climbing walls if big enough. It is thus unfortunate that the size of your climbing wall will largely depend on the amount of space you have to your availability.

The next step is to draw up some plans, albeit very roughly, of how the climbing wall should look when the construction work is eventually done. This will give you and your co-climbers a good idea of the materials to be used to transform the room into climbing walls. You will need to visit timber shops and hardware stores, purchasing all the required material. You should try and keep your costs down as much as you can, because if you are to spend too much money on this project, you can just as well use it to go and do some rock climbing elsewhere. If you have some friends or family members that also want to try out rock climbing, they should contribute financially, seeing as they will subsequently use the climbing wall just as much.

After the construction of the climbing wall is finished, you and your co-climbers will have hours upon hours of fun climbing it. Not only will you enjoy it very much, but you will also improve your fitness levels. If you want to read more about climbing walls in general, simply click here.
