(AP) ? Syria's opposition plunged into disarray Sunday as its president quit and its military chief refused to recognize the newly elected prime minister of an interim government for rebel-held areas.

The moves reflected deep splits in the body the U.S. and its allies hope will emerge as the united face of the opposition and advance the fight to topple President Bashar Assad's regime.

The missteps of the opposition's mostly exile political leadership drew little notice inside Syria, where rebel fighters dismissed it as ineffective and pushed ahead with their offensive to gain ground near the country's southern border with Jordan. Nearby, the Israeli military in the Golan Heights responded to fire by shooting back at targets inside Syria.

The first blow to the opposition Syrian National Coalition was the surprise resignation of its president, who said he was quitting in frustration over what he called lack of international support and constraints imposed by the body itself.

Mouaz al-Khatib, who rose to prominence as a preacher in Damascus' most famous mosque, said in a statement posted on his Facebook page that he was making good on an earlier vow to quit if undefined "red lines" were crossed.

"I am keeping my promise today and announcing my resignation from the National Coalition so that I can work with freedom that is not available inside the official institutions," he said.

He also blamed world powers for not offering Syria's rebels the support they demand and complained that "international and regional parties" tried to push the Coalition toward negotiations with the Assad regime ? something most members refuse.

"All that has happened to the Syrian people ? from destruction of infrastructure, to the arrest of tens of thousands, to the displacement of hundreds of thousands, to other tragedies ? is not enough for an international decision to allow the Syrian people to defend themselves," the statement said.

Despite electing a new, U.S.-educated prime minister last week to head a planned interim government, the Coalition has failed to make much of a mark inside Syria, where hundreds of independent rebel brigades are fighting a civil war against Assad's forces.

Reflecting the growing dissension over that move, the head of the Coalition's military branch, Gen. Salim Idris, said his group refused to recognize the new prime minister, a little-known IT professional from Texas, because he lacked broad support among the opposition.

"For the purpose of giving power to a prime minister to unite the revolutionary forces and lead the Syrian revolution toward certain victory, we unequivocally declare that the Free Syrian Army ... conditions its support and cooperation on the achievement of a political agreement on the name of a prime minister," Idris said in an online video.

An aide to Idris, Louay Almokdad, said many prominent Syrian opposition figures opposed the election of Ghassan Hitto, who received 35 out of 48 votes cast by the Coalition's 63 active members.

While al-Khatib's resignation surprised many Coalition members, some said it reflected problems that have caused five other members to resign in the past week.

Coalition member Rima Fleihan told The Associated Press in Cairo that the body did not accurately represent Syrians.

"We have problems internally with the structure of the Coalition and decisions being taken undemocratically," she said.

Another recently resigned member, Walid al-Bunni, accused the Gulf state of Qatar, which heavily finances the opposition, of using pressure to install its candidate for prime minister. Others have accused the Muslim Brotherhood of exercising outsized influence.

Late Sunday, the Coalition distributed a statement saying it had rejected the resignation and asked al-Khatib to keep doing his job.

Secretary of State John Kerry said he regretted al-Khatib's resignation, but said it won't affect U.S. aid to the Coalition.

Speaking to reporters during an unannounced trip to Baghdad, Kerry also said he had confronted Iraq, Syria's eastern neighbor, about allowing Iran access to its airspace for flights the U.S. believes are ferrying in weapons and fighters to the Assad regime.

In a small victory for the opposition, senior Arab diplomats said they would transfer Syria's seat at the Arab League to the Coalition. The Syrian government's membership was suspended earlier in the crisis. The Coalition said it would send a delegation to a league summit that begins Tuesday in Qatar.

The Syrian government, which contends the civil war is an international conspiracy being carried out by terrorists to weaken Syria, did not comment on the Coalition developments. Instead, it hosted a "National Dialogue Forum" in Damascus that included none of the forces seeking Assad's ouster.

Few of the rebels inside Syria paid any attention to the exile opposition's problems, saying the Coalition had never done much for them anyway.

"All this stuff that happens outside never makes any difference to us," rebel fighter Firas Filefleh said via Skype from the northern province of Idlib. He said he and his colleagues respect al-Khatib as a religious figure but that he and the Coalition were ineffective.

"The Coalition has never made any difference for the fighting brigades," he said. "They brought some flour and some canned goods but have never done more than that."

Filefleh said he had no opinion of Hitto and said he had never heard of Gen. Idris, who purports to be the rebels' highest military leader.

Late Sunday, the Coalition circulated videos it said showed Hitto during his first visit to Syria since his election. The videos showed Hitto in a sport coat and jeans, shaking hands in an unnamed town in Aleppo province.

Meanwhile, rebels tried to advance their campaign to gain ground along the southern border with Jordan.

Since last summer, the opposition has seized large swathes of land near the Turkish and Iraqi borders to the north and east, and has used them to organize and build supply lines.

Victory in the south could allow them to do the same there. They have recently seized army checkpoints along a 15-mile (25-kilometer) strip of the border. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said rebels clashed Sunday with forces at a checkpoint and military base in the area.

Also Sunday, Israel's military said soldiers on patrol in the Golan Heights were fired upon and responded by firing back into Syria. It did not say if the Syrian fire was from rebels or the government.

Rebels have been making gains on the Syrian side of the Golan Heights, a strategic plateau that Israel captured from Syria in the 1967 Mideast war and later annexed.

The U.N. says more than 70,000 people have been killed since Syria's crisis began in March 2011.

Gillmor Gang: It's Alright, Bob

gillmor-gang-test-pattern_excerptThe Gillmor Gang ? Robert Scoble, Danny Sullivan, Kevin Marks, and Steve Gillmor ? convened with Gillmor in Boston and the Gang in California. We took another cut at the Google Reader damage, with @dannysullivan hating on notifications and @scobleizer hating on Android's notifications. Did I say I told him so? Yes I did. But the mere fact we spent so much time on the stream's destruction of Windows and RSS proved the point all along (for me since 2009). Namely, that the new platform is the stream, and the resulting multiplexed meritocracy of the combined social and messaging networks is where the developers will go. Nanowire solar cells raise efficiency limit

Mar. 24, 2013 ? Scientists from the Nano-Science Center at the Niels Bohr Institut, Denmark and the Ecole Polytechnique F?d?rale de Lausanne, Switzerland, have shown that a single nanowire can concentrate the sunlight up to 15 times of the normal sun light intensity. The results are surprising and the potential for developing a new type of highly efficient solar cells is great.

Due to some unique physical light absorption properties of nanowires, the limit of how much energy we can utilize from the sun's rays is higher than previous believed. These results demonstrate the great potential of development of nanowire-based solar cells, says PhD Peter Krogstrup on the surprising discovery that is described in the journal Nature Photonics.

The research groups have during recent years studied how to develop and improve the quality of the nanowire crystals, which is a cylindrical structure with a diameter of about 10,000 part of a human hair. The nanowires are predicted to have great potential in the development not only of solar cells, but also of future quantum computers and other electronic products.

It turns out that the nanowires naturally concentrate the sun's rays into a very small area in the crystal by up to a factor 15. Because the diameter of a nanowire crystal is smaller than the wavelength of the light coming from the sun it can cause resonances in the intensity of light in and around nanowires. Thus, the resonances can give a concentrated sunlight, where the energy is converted, which can be used to give a higher conversion effeciency of the sun's energy, says Peter Krogstrup, who with this discovery contributes to that the research in solar cell technology based on nanowires get a real boost.

New efficiency limit

The typical efficiency limit -- the so-called "Shockley-Queisser Limit" -- is a limit, which for many years has been a landmark for solar cells efficiency among researchers, but now it seems that it may be increased.

It's exciting as a researcher to move the theoretical limits, as we know. Although it does not sound like much, that the limit is moved by only a few percent, it will have a major impact on the development of solar cells, exploitation of nanowire solar rays and perhaps the extraction of energy at international level. However, it will take some years years before production of solar cells consisting of nanowires becomes a reality, says Peter Krogstrup who just completed his PhD at the Niels Bohr Institute, University of Copenhagen.

The research is conducted in collaboration with the Laboratory des Mat?riaux Semiconducteurs, Ecole Polytechnique F?d?rale de Lausanne, the Foundation and the company SunFlake A / S. Their scientific findings work support results published in the journal Science in January. Here, a group of researchers from Lund, showed that the sun's rays was sucked into the nanowires due to the high amount of power that their solar cell produced.

Cyprus faces last ditch chance to save economy

By Michele Kambas and Karolina Tagaris

NICOSIA (Reuters) - Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades, seeking a last-minute reprieve from financial meltdown at talks in Brussels on Sunday, has a "very difficult task" ahead of him if he is to save the island's economy, a government spokesman said.

With Cyprus facing a Monday deadline to avert a collapse of its banking system and potential exit from the euro, late night talks in Nicosia to seal a bailout from the EU and International Monetary Fund broke up without result.

Anastasiades then headed to Brussels in a private jet sent by the European Commission to continue the talks ahead of a crunch meeting of euro zone finance ministers at 6 p.m. (12.00 p.m. ET).

The president and his team have a "very difficult task to accomplish to save the Cypriot economy and avert a disorderly default if there is no final agreement on a loan accord," the spokesman said.

Underlining the gravity of Cyprus' position, the EU's economic affairs chief said there were now "only hard choices left" for the latest casualty of the euro zone crisis.

After negotiations ended in the early hours of Sunday morning, the government issuing a statement saying talks were at "a very delicate phase" and deadlines were very tight.

The Cyprus government's tone jarred with earlier expressions of cautious optimism during days of intense negotiations between Cypriot leaders and officials from the island's "troika" of international lenders, the EU, IMF and European Central Bank.

Cyprus' overgrown banking sector has been crippled by exposure to crisis-hit Greece, and the EU says the east Mediterranean island must raise 5.8 billion euros on its own before it can receive a 10 billion euro bailout.

Without a deal on Monday, the ECB says it will cut off emergency funds to Cypriot banks, spelling certain collapse and potentially pushing the country out of the euro zone.

Conservative leader Anastasiades, barely a month in the job and wrestling with Cyprus' worst crisis since a 1974 invasion by Turkish forces split the island in two, is expected to meet the heads of the EU, the European Central Bank and IMF in Brussels.

Scrambling to find the funds, officials said Cyprus had conceded to a one-time levy on bank deposits over 100,000 euros, a dramatic U-turn from five days ago when lawmakers angrily threw out a similar proposal as "bank robbery."

A senior Cypriot official said Nicosia had agreed with its lenders on a 20 percent levy over and above 100,000 euros at the island's largest lender, Bank of Cyprus, and four percent on deposits above the same level at other troubled banks.

'ONLY HARD CHOICES LEFT'

Finance Minister Michael Sarris spoke of "significant progress" in talks on Saturday, as angry demonstrators outside the finance ministry chanted "resign, resign!"

The EU's Economic Affairs Commissioner, Olli Rehn, said progress was being made, but warned of tough times ahead.

"Unfortunately, the events of recent days have led to a situation where there are no longer any optimal solutions available," he said on Saturday. "Today, there are only hard choices left."

In a stunning vote on Tuesday, Cyprus's 56-seat parliament rejected a levy on depositors, big and small, and Sarris spent three fruitless days in Moscow trying to win help from Russia, whose citizens have billions of euros at stake in Cypriot banks.

Rebuffed by the Kremlin, Sarris said the levy was back "on the table".

On Friday, lawmakers voted in late-night session to nationalize pension funds and split failing lenders into good and bad banks - a measure likely to be applied to the second-biggest lender, the largely state-owned Cyprus Popular Bank, also known as Laiki.

Cypriot media reports suggested talks were stuck on a demand by the IMF that Bank of Cyprus absorb the good assets of Popular Bank and take on its nine billion euros debt to the central bank as well.

The reports said the Cypriot government was resisting.

A Cypriot plan to tap pension funds had already been shelved, a senior Cypriot official told Reuters, under opposition from Germany, which had warned the measure might be even more painful for ordinary Cypriots than a deposit levy.

It was also far from certain that a majority of lawmakers would back a revised levy, or whether the government might even try to bypass the assembly.

Ordinary Cypriots have been outraged by the levy and stunned at the pace of the unfolding drama. They elected Anastasiades in February on a mandate to secure a bailout and save banks whose capital was wiped out by investments in Greece, the epicenter of the euro zone debt crisis.

RUN ON BANKS

For the past week they have been besieging cash machines ever since bank doors were closed on the orders of the government to avert a massive capital flight. Anticipating a run on banks when they reopen on Tuesday, parliament has given the government powers to impose capital controls.

On Saturday, some 1,500 protesters, many of them bank workers, marched on the presidency, holding banners that read, "No to the bankruptcy of Cyprus" and "Hands off workers' welfare funds".

The levy on bank deposits represents an unprecedented step in Europe's handling of a debt crisis that has spread from Greece, to Ireland, Portugal, Spain and Italy.

Cypriot leaders had initially tried to spread the pain between big holdings and smaller depositors, fearing the damage it would inflict on the country as an offshore financial haven for wealthy foreigners, many of them Russians and Britons.

The tottering banks hold 68 billion euros in deposits, including 38 billion in accounts of more than 100,000 euros - enormous sums for an island of 1.1 million people which could never sustain such a big financial system on its own.

Obama withdraws appeals court pick

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama withdrew his nomination of Caitlin Halligan to a federal appeals court Friday, handing a victory to Republicans in the Senate who twice blocked his pick for the key judicial post.

Calling the obstruction by Republicans unjustified and unacceptable, Obama said he agreed to Halligan's request to be pulled from consideration even though she would have served with distinction on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.

"I am deeply disappointed that even after nearly two and a half years, a minority of senators continued to block a simple up-or-down vote on her nomination," Obama said in a statement the White House issued while he was traveling in Jordan.

Senate Republicans blocked Halligan's confirmation for a second time in early March, arguing that Halligan is too liberal and citing her work on lawsuits against gun manufacturers and on behalf of illegal immigrants. The National Rifle Association also staunchly opposed her confirmation.

The D.C. appeals court and its makeup are of critical importance to the president, with oversight of many of the actions his administration takes. The court handles challenges to most federal rulemaking and oversees federal agencies based in Washington. Obama noted it's also often considered the second-highest court in the U.S.

It's also something of a pipeline to the Supreme Court. Four of the nine Supreme Court justices served on the D.C. Circuit before being confirmed to the higher court. Halligan herself was nominated to fill the position that John Roberts vacated when he became chief justice.

There are four vacancies on the court, with judges nominated by Republican presidents holding a 4-3 majority.

Halligan's nomination has been a flash point for Obama and Republicans since 2010, when Obama first tapped her to fill the vacancy on the bench. Republicans stalled, then used a procedural maneuver to prevent a vote on her confirmation. Obama re-nominated her at the start of 2013, but her confirmation again fell victim to GOP opposition in early March. Although a majority of senators, 51, supported Halligan's nomination, Democrats needed 60 votes in the 100-member Senate to get it past Republican objections.

Sen. Patrick Leahy, a Vermont Democrat who chairs the Senate Judiciary Committee, said Halligan is among the most qualified nominees he's ever seen a president nominate and that she would certainly have been confirmed had Republicans permitted a regular vote, where only a simple majority would be required.

"It is a shame that narrow, special interests hold such influence," he said.

In a letter Friday to Obama, Halligan said it had been a "tremendous honor" to be nominated, but she made no reference to the clash with Republicans that stymied her confirmation.

"After much reflection, I believe that the time has come for me to respectfully to withdraw my pending nomination from further consideration," wrote Halligan, general counsel for the New York County District Attorney's Office.

The skirmish over Halligan's nomination has also become entangled in a larger partisan fight over Republican efforts to hinder Obama's agenda and the use of Senate procedures to prevent the president from getting his judicial picks.

"Nominations to this court are beginning to be treated like Supreme Court nominees, with very close scrutiny," said Carl Tobias, who teaches law at the University of Richmond. "Senators could be emboldened to filibuster more appeals court nominees ? especially for the D.C. Circuit."

Democrats have accused the GOP of foiling Halligan's nomination as part of a plot to maintain a conservative majority on the key appellate court. Republicans have insisted that's not true, arguing that they objected specifically to Halligan, not Democratic nominees in general.

Republican leader Mitch McConnell called Halligan's former work as solicitor general for the state of New York "a textbook example of judicial activism." In one case he cited, Halligan filed a brief to the Supreme Court arguing that the National Labor Relations Board should have the legal authority to grant back pay to illegal aliens. In another, Halligan argued that gun manufacturers contributed to a public nuisance of illegal handguns in the state.

The White House said it has 18 judicial nominees awaiting confirmation. Among them is U.S. Magistrate Judge Patty Shwartz, who has been waiting more than a year for her confirmation to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, based in Philadelphia.

Obama's judicial nominees ? not counting the Supreme Court ? have waited an average of 117 days for final confirmation after being approved in committee, the White House said. That's compared to 34 days for President George W. Bush and 16 days for President Bill Clinton at the equivalent point in their presidencies.

The White House has not said whom Obama will nominate in place of Halligan, nor what the timeline will be for making that decision.

'Something has been broken in Syria'

AMMAN, Jordan (AP) ? Anxious to keep Syria's civil war from spiraling into even worse problems, President Barack Obama said Friday he worries about the country becoming a haven for extremists when ? not if ? President Bashar Assad is ousted from power.

Obama, standing side by side with Jordan's King Abdullah II, said the international community must work together to ensure there is a credible opposition ready to step into the breach.

"Something has been broken in Syria, and it's not going to be put back together perfectly immediately ? even after Assad leaves," Obama said. "But we can begin the process of moving it in a better direction, and having a cohesive opposition is critical to that."

He said Assad is sure to go but there is great uncertainty about what will happen after that.

"I am very concerned about Syria becoming an enclave for extremism," Obama said, adding that extremism thrives in chaos and failed states. He said the rest of the world has a huge stake in ensuring that a functioning Syria emerges.

"The outcome is Syria is not going to be ideal," he acknowledged, adding that strengthening a credible opposition was crucial to minimizing the difficulties.

Eager to resolve another source of tension in the region, the president earlier Friday helped broker a phone call between the Israeli and Turkish prime ministers that led to the restoration of normal diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Obama had come to Jordan from Israel, where Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu placed a call to Turkey's Recep Tayyip Erdogan to apologize for the deaths of nine Turkish activists in a 2010 Israeli naval raid on a Gaza-bound international flotilla.

"The timing was good for that conversation to take place," Obama said.

Obama, at a joint news conference with Abdullah, said his administration is working with Congress to provide Jordan with an additional $200 million in aid this year to cope with the massive influx of refugees streaming into the country from Syria.

Abdullah said the refugee population in his country has topped 460,000 and is likely to double by the end of the year ? the equivalent of 30 million refugees in the United States, he said.

Obama also said he would "keep on plugging away" in hopes of getting the Israelis and Palestinians to reach a peace agreement.

"The window of opportunity still exists, but it's getting more and more difficult," the president said. "The mistrust is building instead of ebbing."

On Iran, Obama reiterated that the U.S. is open to "every option that's available" to keep the country from developing a nuclear weapon.

He said it would be "extraordinarily dangerous" for the world if Iran does become nuclear capable, and he expressed his desire for using diplomatic means to halt Iran's nuclear aspirations. Iran insists its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes.

"My hope and expectation is that among a menu of options, the option that involves negotiations, discussions, compromise and resolution of the problem is the one that's exercised," Obama said. "But as president of the United States I would never take any option off the table."

Obama arrived in Jordan on Friday evening, the final stop on a four-day visit to the Middle East that included his first stop in Israel as president.

He began his visit to Amman with an apology.

"I apologize for the delay," Obama told Abdullah after arriving about an hour behind schedule. "We ended up having a dust storm."

The two leaders headed to dinner after their news conference. On Saturday, Obama planned several hours of sightseeing, including a tour of the fabled ancient city of Petra, before the return trip to Washington.

Before leaving Israel, Obama paid his respects to the nation's heroes and to victims of the Holocaust. He also solemnly reaffirmed the Jewish state's right to exist.

Accompanied by Netanyahu and President Shimon Peres, Obama laid wreaths at the graves of Theodor Herzl, the founder of modern Zionism who died in 1904 before realizing his dream of a Jewish homeland, and former Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, who was assassinated in 1995.

He also toured the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial, declaring afterward that it illustrates the depravity to which man can sink but also serves as a reminder of the "righteous among the nations who refused to be bystanders."

Friday's stop at Herzl's grave, together with Thursday's visit to see the Dead Sea Scrolls, the ancient Hebrew texts, were symbolic stops for Obama that acknowledged a rationale for Israel's existence that rests with its historical ties to the region and with a vision that predated the Holocaust. Obama has been criticized in Israel for his 2009 Cairo speech in which he gave only the example of the Holocaust as a reason for justifying Israel's existence.

"Here on your ancient land, let it be said for all the world to hear," Obama said. "The state of Israel does not exist because of the Holocaust, but with the survival of a strong Jewish state of Israel, such a holocaust will never happen again."

Obama and Netanyahu met for two hours over lunch. An Israeli official said that they discussed Israel's security challenges and that, in addressing the peace process with Palestinians, Netanyahu stressed the importance of security. The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity under diplomatic protocol.

Obama also squeezed in a stop in Bethlehem in the West Bank to visit the Church of the Nativity.

He had been scheduled to take a helicopter to Bethlehem but had to change plans due to unusually high winds. The route gave Obama a clear look at Israel's separation barrier with the West Bank, which runs south of Jerusalem and is the subject of weekly protests by Palestinians.

About 300 Palestinians and international pilgrims gathered near the Nativity Church, awaiting Obama's arrival. But a knot of protesters along the route held up signs stating: "Gringo, return to your colony" and "US supports Israeli injustice."

At a nearby mosque, Mohammed Ayesh, a Muslim religious official in Bethlehem, issued a plea to Obama in a speech to worshippers: "America, where are your values? Where are the human rights? Isn't it time that you interfere to make it stop?"

Amid high security, Obama toured the church with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. They stopped at the Grotto of the Nativity, which is said to stand where Jesus Christ was born. About 20 children waving U.S. and Palestinian flags greeted Obama in a courtyard outside the sanctuary. He posed for photographs with Abbas and Bethlehem's mayor, Vera Baboun.

At Yad Vashem, Obama donned a skull cap and was accompanied by Rabbi Israel Meir Lau, a survivor of the Buchenwald Concentration camp who lost both parents in the Holocaust. Among his stops was Yad Vashem's Hall of Names, a circular chamber that contains original testimony documenting every Holocaust victim ever identified.

"Nothing could be more powerful," Obama said.

Rebels seize air defense base in southern Syria

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syrian rebels on Saturday seized a major air defense base in a strategic region of southern Syria near the Jordanian border in the latest battlefield triumph for fighters seeking to topple President Bashar Assad, activists said.

Fighters with a rebel group active in the south stormed and seized control of the air defense base used by the 38th Division after a 16-day siege, according to a statement posted on websites of the group known as the Yarmouk Martyrs Brigade.

The base near the village of Saida is situated along the international highway linking the Syrian capital, Damascus, with Jordan to the south.

Fighting in Syria's southern provinces bordering Jordan and Israel has increased sharply in the past few days. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said dozens of people, mostly opposition fighters, were killed in heavy clashes this week in the Quneitra region along the cease-fire line between Syria and Israel in the Golan Heights.

The Britain-based group, which relies on a network of activists on the ground, said it had documented the deaths of 35 opposition fighters and the loss of contact with more than 20 others believed to have died in the fighting. Dozens of others were wounded, the group said.

The fighting in the area intensified midweek after rebels seized a village and parts of other villages, closing in on the strategic plateau that Israel captured from Syria in 1967 and later annexed.

If the rebels take over the Quneitra region, it will bring radical Islamic militants to a front line with Israeli troops. The rebel force comprises dozens of groups, including the powerful al-Qaida-linked Jabhat al-Nusra, which the Obama administration labels a terrorist organization.

The Observatory said al-Nusra was among fighters who seized the air defense base in Daraa province. Both the rebels and the observatory reported that the opposition fighters killed the base commander.

In Damascus, supporters of Assad gathered in downtown amid tight security for the funeral of one of Syria's best-known clerics who was assassinated in a brazen mosque bombing earlier this week.

Security forces sealed off all roads leading to the eighth century Omayyad Mosque where the funeral for Sheik Mohammad Said Ramadan al-Buti, an 84-year-old pro-government cleric, was held.

Al-Buti, his grandson and 48 others were killed Thursday when a suicide bomber detonated his explosives inside a mosque where al-Buti was giving a religious lesson.

His assassination was a blow to Assad, who vowed Friday to avenge his death, saying he would "purge" the country of the militants behind the attack in the heart of the capital.

Both Assad and the rebels seeking to topple him have blamed each other for the bombing at the mosque.

Al-Buti, the most prominent religious figure killed so far in the 2-year-old conflict, had supported the regime since the early days of Assad's father and predecessor, the late President Hafez Assad, providing legitimacy to their rule. Sunnis are the majority sect in Syria while Assad is from the minority Alawite sect ? an offshoot of Shiite Islam.

Mourners carried al-Buti and his grandson's coffins, draped in white cloth, on their shoulders amid shouts of "God is Great."

Al-Buti was imam of the Omayyad Mosque, a landmark in Damascus. Church bells tolls and mosque minarets in the ancient city blared "God is Great" during the funeral procession.

Syrian state TV said Assad was being represented at the funeral by one of his cabinet ministers.

Al-Buti was being buried in a courtyard at the rear of the mosque near the tomb of Saladin, a medieval Muslim ruler.

In a show of support, a delegation from the Lebanese Shiite Muslim Hezbollah group, a staunch ally of Assad, drove to Damascus for the funeral. A delegation from Iran was also present.

"We will continue on the same path," said Sheik Mohammed Yazbeck, a member Hezbollah's highest decision-making body, the Shura Council. "We will return the blow to the enemies of Syria and the enemies of the nation," he added.

Facebook And Twitter Fail To Innovate - Business Insider

Social Media Insights is a daily newsletter from Business Insider that collects and delivers the top social media news first thing every morning. You can sign up to receive Social Media Insights here or at the bottom of this post.

Facebook And Twitter No Longer Leading Innovation (Business 2 Community)
Each year, the business and technology-focused publication Fast Company releases a Most Innovative Companies list. Facebook and Twitter failed to make the cut this year because both failed to focus on their long-term visions in favor of short-term projects and goals, a misstep that has frustrated their users and investors alike.?In contrast, the companies that did make the "Most Innovative" list have a consistent thread through their efforts: a combination of forward thinking and customer-centric service. So who has replaced them? Companies like Pinterest,?ModCloth, Birchbox and Yelp.?Facebook and Twitter held that spotlight for a while, but it looks like they?ll have to up the ante.

Correlation Between Twitter Buzz And TV Ratings (Marketing Charts)
An increase in Twitter volume about live TV correlates with an increase in TV ratings across varying age groups, finds Nielsen in a study conducted with SocialGuide. Examining the results, Nielsen reveals that for 18-34-year-olds, an 8.5 percent rise in Twitter volume corresponds with a 1 percent increase in TV ratings for premiere episodes. By midseason, the relationship is stronger, with a 4.2 percent gain in Twitter volume corresponding with a 1 percent rise in TV ratings. For the 35-49 age group, a 14 percent increase in Twitter volume corresponded with a 1 percent rise in ratings for premiere episodes, while for midseason episodes, the associated Twitter volume increase was 8.4 percent. Why You Might Not Start Your Business As A Facebook App (Forbes)
There?s a problem with basing oneself on Facebook: which is that it is indeed a platform. And they?re trying to monetize that platform just as fast as you are. The more successful your app is in appealing to that customer base the more likely it is that you?ll find Facebook itself competing with you with their own service. Or buying you of course. It sounds very strange but it is possible that the best approach to that Facebook platform would be to hope for being a niche success: successful enough that you do very well, of course, but not so successful that you get Facebook itself competing with you. YouTube Joins Facebook In The Billion Monthly User Club (VentureBeat)
Google announced that YouTube now has over a billion unique visitors every single month. Which means that Google and Facebook have something very rare in common: both have a billion-person social network. What does that look like? Google says that:

  • Nearly one out of every two people on the Internet visits YouTube
  • YouTube?s monthly viewership is the equivalent of ten Super Bowl audiences
  • If YouTube was a country, it would be the third-largest in the world, after China and India

Google+ is officially Google?s social network, but though it has an estimated 343 million monthly active users, that?s just a third of YouTube. And with YouTube?s built-in sharing, commenting, and content creation tools, it?s often considered to be a social network in its own right. Read >>

Pinterest Acquires Livestar, The Mobile Recommendations Startup (TechCrunch)
Pinterest acquired Livestar, the mobile recommendations app founded by Microsoft alum Fritz Lanman. Terms of the deal have not been disclosed, but this seems to be an engineering acquihire situation. Livestar was founded in 2011 and launched at TechCrunch Disrupt this past fall. The service was meant to provide personalized recommendations from your friends and authoritative sources from around the Web, and was aiming at disrupting the likes of Foursquare, Yelp, and Rotten Tomatoes. March Madness Teams Disappoint On Social (Mashable)
It might sound hard to believe, but only 29 out of 64 basketball teams in this year's NCAA "March Madness" competition have both a Facebook and Twitter presence. According to SportStream, which provides a social second-screen experience for sports fans and teams, about 45 percent of tourney teams have team-specific accounts on both Twitter and Facebook. "School athletic departments all have a Facebook and Twitter presence, but when you drill down to dedicated, team-specific accounts, many schools are not yet connecting with fans on a meaningful level," says Bob Morgan, CEO and co-founder of SportStream. For Babies, It's Better To Like What I Like

Babies as young as nine months appear to approve of people who like what they like ? and approve of being mean to those who don't share their tastes. Kiley Hamlin, lead author of a study in the journal Psychological Science, discusses the importance of similarity to young children.

Logitech rebrands gaming line with same name, announces bounty of peripherals

Logitech's G-prefixed gaming peripherals have been around for awhile, but they were never part of an official gaming line. That changes today, with the introduction of Logitech G, the company's official brand for PC gaming peripherals. "The overriding principal of G is that science wins," Logitech told us. "Just as gamers are compelled to beat levels, our engineers are compelled to test scientific theories." A fancy way to say that Logitech's gaming hardware is built using the latest technology.

The company points to its new line of peripherals as an example: eight products featuring hydrophobic coatings, Logitech's exclusive Delta Zero sensor technology and buttons capable of surviving over 20 million toggles. Headlining the new series are the G700s rechargeable gaming mouse and G19s keyboard, which promise anti-stick surfaces, more than a dozen programmable buttons apiece and $100 and $200 price tags, respectively. The company's rounding out its line up with a pair of audio devices, too -- the G430 and G230 surround and stereo gaming headsets. That's just the tip of the iceberg of course -- head past the break for Logitech's full roster of G series peripherals.

(AP Photo/South Bend Tribune, Mike Hartman)

(AP) ? Steve Davis, Oklahoma's starting quarterback when it won back-to-back national championships in the 1970s, was one of two people killed when a small aircraft smashed into three homes in northern Indiana, officials said Monday.

St. Joseph County Coroner Randy Magdalinski identified the victims of Sunday's crash in South Bend as 60-year-old Steven Davis and 58-year-old Wesley Caves, both of Tulsa, Okla. An Oklahoma athletics official confirmed it was the same Davis who played for the Sooners. He spoke on condition of anonymity because the school has not yet announced the death.

Caves owned the Beechcraft Premier I twin-jet that clipped one house before slamming into two more Sunday afternoon. Caves had a pilot's license, but it was not immediately clear if he was flying the plane when it crashed.

The plane leaked enough fuel to force the evacuation of hundreds of people from surrounding homes, but most residents were allowed to return Monday morning.

Frank Sojka, 84, who lives in the first home that was struck, went back to his home Monday morning so police could retrieve some items. A total of eight homes remain under mandatory evacuation.

"I'm surprised people survived that," he said as he sat in his car with his son, waiting for police to move the barricade on his street.

Sojka said he was in the front bedroom of the home he's lived in for 55 years when he heard a loud, dull sound.

"I got up and went into the living room and I could see the sky through the ceiling and all kinds of debris in the far end of the living room," he said.

The front part of the fuselage sat wedged inside the third house just southwest of the South Bend Regional Airport, where the pilot had tried to land the plane Sunday afternoon.

Two others on board the plane survived, South Bend Assistant Fire Chief John Corthier said. South Bend Memorial Hospital spokeswoman Maggie Scroope said Monday that Jim Rogers was in serious condition and Christopher Evans was in fair condition.

A woman who neighbors said lived in the middle house that was struck, Diana McKeown, was in fair condition, Scroope said.

Authorities cut the power to several homes in the neighborhood after fuel leaked from the jet's engine into the basement of the home where the fuselage sat creating a "very dangerous" situation, Corthier said.

One neighbor described her terror as the plane bore down on her home.

"I was looking out my picture window," said Mary Jane Klaybor, who lives across the street from the crash site. "This (plane) was coming straight at my house. I went, 'Huh?' and then there was a big crash, and all the insulation went flying."

She said: "I saw the plane, then I heard the boom."

The plane began its journey in Tulsa, Okla. It is registered to 7700 Enterprises in Helena, Mont., which does business in Tulsa as DigiCut Systems and is owned by Caves. It isn't clear how Caves and Davis know each other.

Davis went 32-1-1 as the Sooners' starter from 1973 to 1975, starting every game of Barry Switzer's first three seasons as head coach. Oklahoma tied Southern California in the second game of the 1973 season, and then ran off 28 straight victories with Davis under center. The Sooners went 11-0 in 1974. They won the national title again the following year after going 11-1.

Mike Daigle, executive director of the St. Joseph County Airport Authority, said the plane attempted a landing at the South Bend airport about 4:15 p.m., then went back up and maneuvered south to try another landing, but eight minutes later, the airport learned the plane was no longer airborne.

He provided no information to indicate if the pilot said the plane was experiencing mechanical trouble.

Daigle said Monday he has no firsthand knowledge about what caused the crash.

National Transportation Safety Board investigator Todd Fox said late Sunday the agency will be looking for the cause of the crash and "to identify and remedy any issues that could have prevented this accident."

Beyzacases Aston Martin iPhone Sleeves Review

Gear Diary Apple iPhone and Touch Gear photo

Gorgeous. That?s the word Judie and I seem to always use when describing Beyzacases products. And why do we use the word ?gorgeous?? Simple? they are. Beyzacases uses only the finest leather for their products and then painstakingly design and craft their wares. The result are some of the finest leather accessories on the market. The Beyzacases Aston Martin iPhone Sleeves are no exception. In fact, they are not only gorgeous but they are exceptionally functional as well. We walked away from our time at the booth during CES with two Beyzacases Aston Martin iPhone Sleeves for review. Review them we shall and then, in the next few days, we will give them away.

Gear Diary Apple iPhone and Touch Gear photo

First up it is worth noting that the company?s presentation is as good as it comes. In this case the Beyzacases Aston Martin iPhone Sleeves come in a high-quality box embossed with the Aston Martin name and logo.

Gear Diary Apple iPhone and Touch Gear photo

Inside each box of the Beyzacases Aston Martin iPhone Sleeves is a felt pouch. It has a drawstring to keep it securely closed. Just in case you forgot that these are part of the Beyzacases Aston Martin line, on the pouch is? once again? the Aston Martin name and logo. Yes, it costs the company more to ship their Beyzacases Aston Martin iPhone Sleeves in such a high-quality box and pouch but it is these details that help make these the luxury items they are.

The first sample of the Beyzacases Aston Martin iPhone Sleeves is the ?Slim V? for iPhone 5. The case is made from blemish-less leather and contrasting seams. As Beyzacases explains, ?The distinctive curves of Slim V echo those of an Aston Martin, whilst the exquisite leather hints at the car?s interior?. The combination is gorgeous. The Aston Martin name is embossed on one side of the pouch while the company logo is on the other. Normally I don?t like logos on my products but the Aston Martin wings are so cool that I love having them there.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

The Slim V for iPhone 5 case opens at the bottom. This not only lets you charge the phone while it is in the case but it also helps with removing the phone from the sleeve and allow for audio transfer when the iPhone is in the Slim V. Available in black, brown, tan and camel, the Slim V for iPhone 5 is $90. Learn more here.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

The second of the Beyzacases Aston Martin iPhone Sleeves we have in hand is the Slim ID. A simple pouch with a curved top and a secondary slot on the front. The upper curve adds visual interest but, unfortunately, leaves one corner of the iPhone 5 exposed. I like the fact that the design makes it easy to remove your phone- simply grab the corner- but I don?t like having a protective case that isn?t fully protective. The secondary slot adds even more interest and is perfect for ID and credit cards for those occasions when you want to leave your wallet at home. Like the Slim V, the pouch has the Aston Martin name on one side and the company logo on the other. Volume holes toward the bottom allow for sound to flow out of the phone without needing to remove the device. The Slim ID is available in black, brown, tan and camel for $103.

I like the Beyzacases Aston Martin iPhone Sleeves despite their shortcomings. Of the two the Slim V is my favorite thanks to its ability to full protect the iPhone 5 when it is inside. If you like using a sleeve-style pouch to protect your iPhone on the go and enjoy gorgeous leather you?ll want to check these cases out. The Beyzacases Aston Martin iPhone 5 Sleeves are available directly from the manufacturer.

Disclaimer: Beyzacases is a Gear Diary advertiser.

MSRP: $90-$103

What I Like: Gorgeous leather; Striking designs; Amazing quality finish

What Needs Improvement: Phone needs to be removed for full use; Slim ID leaves one corner of the phone exposed

Cano, Santana help Dominican Republic stifle Puerto Rico at World Baseball Classic

The first two times the Dominican Republic participated in the World Baseball Classic with star-studded teams, overconfidence and pressure doomed them.

None of that seems to be bothering them this time around. With a festive crowd of 25,846 at Marlins Park cheering them on Saturday afternoon, the Dominicans checked out of Round 2 the way they did Round 1 ? with an unbeaten record and another win over Latin American rival Puerto Rico.

Wandy Rodriguez tossed six scoreless innings, catcher Carlos Santana hit a solo home run and Robinson Cano took home Most Valuable Player honors in a 2-0 victory.

Up next for both teams: a trip to the semifinals at San Francisco?s AT&T Park.

Two-time defending champion Japan will face Puerto Rico Sunday night. The Dominicans, who lost twice to the Netherlands and were eliminated by them in the first round of the 2009 tournament, get a shot at redemption against the Dutch Monday night. The championship game is Tuesday.

?You cannot play baseball without freedom,? Dominican manager Tony Pena said. ?You have to have freedom to do whatever you want on the field, provided you don?t break the rules of the game. My players, none of them are breaking the rules of the game. What they are simply doing is enjoying what they love, what they like to do and the way they work, and I?m not going to stop it. This is meant to be enjoyed; they are enjoying it.?

As usual, Fernando Rodney came in and tied the bow in the ninth, earning his tournament leading fifth save and celebrating it by firing an imaginary arrow into the sky.

Puerto Rico, which produced just three hits, didn?t have many chances to score. But they did have runners in scoring position. Dominican shortstop Erick Aybar, though, made two perfect throws to erase those threats.

In the third, he fielded a grounder from Andy Gonzalez and gunned out pinch-runner Irving Falu at the plate. In the eighth, after catcher Martin Maldonado reached on a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, Aybar fielded another grounder from Gonzalez and gunned Maldonado out at the third.

Later in the inning, Jesus Feliciano drove a 3-2 pitch deep down the right field line with a runner on and two outs. But the ball, which would have gone out for a home run, sailed about 15 feet right of the foul pole. After drawing a walk and putting runners on first and second, pinch-hitter Pedro Valdes stepped to the plate against Santiago Casilla and grounded out to second to end the threat.

Puerto Rico manager Edwin Rodriguez said although his team has the tough task of taking a long flight out to the West Coast and playing an experienced Japanese team that has had time off since advancing out of Round 2, his team is ready.

?We were also at a disadvantage against Venezuela and a disadvantage when we got here,? the former Marlins skipper said. ?So the players and the team have already learned how to play in these types of situations, and we are still here among the [last] four.?

Right-hander Mario Santiago, who spent last season pitching in Korean Baseball League, will start for Puerto Rico.

The Dominicans will send Padres ace Edinson Volquez to the mound to start against the Netherlands. Twins right-hander Samuel Deduno, who pitched five innings of one-run ball against the United States, is in line to start the final Tuesday night.

?I wouldn?t call it [collecting] a debt,? Cano said of facing the Dutch. ?You have to forget what happened in the past and play hard. It?s a matter of winning each game to remain in the fight.?

Organizers for the WBC were more than pleased with the attendance at Marlins Park. In all, a total of 154,624 passed through the gates for the six games played in South Florida.

?The Marlins staff from Jeffrey Loria to David Samson to Claude Delorme to all the guys in the ticket office, these guys did an amazing job,? said Tim Brosnan, the Executive Vice President for Business for Major League Baseball.

?Their customer hospitality and how the ballpark has been handled and presented we really couldn?t have asked for a better host. Anyone lucky enough to be at the U.S.-Dominican game the other night witnessed a baseball game for the ages on a beautiful night in a beautiful ballpark with a level of intensity that you dream about this tournament ending.?

Asked if Miami might serve as the host for the finals in 2017, Brosnan said: ?I think based on the performance we?re coming off of right now, the sky is the limit for this stadium, for this city, for this franchise as the host ? whatever round they decide to bid on.?

New study points to the aggressive potential of small kidney tumors, advocates treatment

Mar. 16, 2013 ? Small kidney tumours have an aggressive potential and should be treated, according to a the results of a large multicentre study presented at the 28th Annual EAU Congress in Milan.

"Many clinicians regard small renal cell cancer as having a benign biologic behavior and non-operative surveillance protocols are often being used in patients with small renal tumours," write the authors in the findings. "The aim of this large retrospective multi-centre study was to evaluate the prevalence of locally advanced growth and distant metastases in patients with small renal cell carcinomas following surgery."

The investigation included 2197 patients with RCC of 4 cm or smaller in maximal tumour diameter and complete patient and tumour specific characteristics from six centers in Germany between 1990 and 2011.

The risk of presenting nodal disease or distant metastasis increased insignificantly with rising tumour diameter. After a mean follow-up of more than 5 years, the tumour-associated death rates were 6.5, 7.6, and 8.4 % in the ? 2 cm, 2-3 cm, and 3-4 cm tumour diameter subgroups, respectively. Kaplan-Meier 5-year cancer specific survival (CSS) rates did not differ significantly: 93.3, 92.1, and 92.8 %.

Patients with no lymphatic or distant metastasis at the time of diagnosis or surgery had a 5-year cancer specific death rate of 5.8 %. 5-year cancer related death rate was significantly higher among the 75 patients with nodal or distant involvement at the time of surgery (p<0.001).

In conclusion, the authors stress that lymph node and distant metastases occur even in small RCCs: "These results have significant implications since the rate of patients diagnosed with small renal masses is increasing and non-operative surveillance protocols are currently being used in patients with small renal tumour."

(AP) ? The Mississippi Rebels now have two very big items on their resume that nobody can take away.

Murphy Holloway scored 23 points and Marshall Henderson had 21 as the Rebels gave coach Andy Kennedy his first NCAA tournament berth by upsetting 13th-ranked Florida 66-63 on Sunday for the Southeastern Conference tournament championship.

"So much is made about the NCAA tournament," Kennedy said. "I was just glad to get the albatross that is the NCAA tournament off the neck of our program so people can now exhale and get a new focal point."

The Rebels (26-8) have won seven of eight grabbing their first tournament title since 1981 and their second ever. Even though they thought reaching this game for the first time since 2001 probably clinched their seventh NCAA bid in Kennedy's seventh season as coach, the Rebels wanted the SEC championship too.

"We worked so hard to get to this point, and it just feels so good to celebrate with the guys in the locker room," Rebels senior guard Nick Williams said. "I don't know man. I'm at a loss for words."

Reginald Buckner added 13 points for Ole Miss, which won two straight without point guard Jarvis Summers. The sophomore suffered a concussion in Friday night's 64-62 win over Missouri. That forced Kennedy to use Ladarius White, while Henderson and freshman Derrick Millinghaus also handled the ball.

"Can you imagine going into a game of this magnitude with a backup quarterback?" Kennedy said. "And that's what this team had to do."

Florida (26-7) hasn't won this tournament since wrapping up a three-peat in 2007, and the Gators lost to Kentucky in this game two years go. The SEC regular season champs still haven't won a game by fewer than 10 points this season. They go into the NCAA tournament 0-6 in games decided by six points or less.

"The people trying to create this drama around a situation that's not necessarily true," Florida coach Billy Donovan said. "Our guys haven't lost confidence at all. They dug themselves a hole with our lack of defense. ... The truth of the matter is we were up 12 and allowed Ole Miss to shoot 53 percent in the second half and we shot 29 percent."

The Gators had a final chance to force overtime. Scottie Wilbekin missed two free throws with 4.2 seconds left, and Kenny Boynton's last gasp 3 glanced off the rim after he took a step back to make sure he was over the line.

"I kind of rushed it because I was trying to back up and make sure it was a 3-point shot before time ran out," Boynton said.

Mike Rosario had 18 points and Boynton added 13 for the Gators.

Ole Miss outshot the regular season champs 47.4 percent (27 of 57) compared to 37.3 percent (22 of 59) and outrebounded them 37-34. That gave the Rebels an 11-5 edge on second-chance points. The Gators struggled at the free throw line, making 3 of 11 there in the second half. They missed their final five attempts over the last 4:19.

Florida came in third nationally holding opponents to 52.3 points a game, while Ole Miss is the sixth-best scoring offense in the country with 78.7 points a game.

"The frustrating part for me was just our defense because we clearly have been one of the better defensive teams all year long," Donovan said.

Florida led 38-26 at halftime after hitting 7 of 14 3-pointers, taking advantage of Henderson hitting just 1 of 6 from the floor with three points.

The Rebels opened the second half on a 10-3 run to get back into the game. The Gators missed eight of their first 10 shots in the half, and Henderson found Buckner for a dunk with 13:39 left that tied it up for the first time at 43. The teams swapped the lead with the Gators using seven straight points to go up 53-52 on a 3-pointer by Murphy.

Then Williams hit a jumper, Henderson scored on a driving layup, and Henderson knocked down another 3 off a miss by Williams when Buckner poked the ball out to the feisty guard, putting Ole Miss up 59-53 with 7:15 left. Henderson celebrated by doing the gator chomp at Florida fans before heading to the bench for a timeout.

Henderson was named the tournament MVP after being snubbed by league coaches for the All-SEC first team earlier in the week.

"They didn't win this tournament. We did," Henderson said. "We went in with a chip on our shoulder. Maybe they'll be smarter next year."

The Gators got within two points twice down the stretch, the last at 65-63 when Rosario drove to the basket for a layup with 35.4 seconds left. Casey Prather stole the ball from Henderson with 22.3 seconds left, and Donovan called a timeout.

Erik Murphy missed an 8-foot jump hook over Buckner with less than 10 seconds left, and Holloway grabbed his 10th rebound and was fouled immediately. He hit a free throw with 8.6 seconds remaining for the final margin setting up the Gators' last chance.

"I was just like, 'Man, just make one. Just make one just in case they hit a 3 we can go into overtime,'" Holloway recalled. "Me and my boy Reg been struggling, ever since we got here, we've been struggling. I knew I had to step up. So I stepped up. I made one."
