Tens of thousands of Hong Kong parents marched in the streets yesterday to protest against a school curriculum plan they said was an attempt to brainwash students by extolling the achievements of the Chinese Communist Party.
The controversy is the latest backlash against perceived political influence from Beijing in the former British colony that returned to Chinese rule in 1997.
The furore focuses on a Hong Kong government-funded 34-page book titled The China Model celebrating China?s single party Communist state as a unique political system under which its economy and society have flourished.
The book will form the basis of a national education curriculum for students aged six years and older in Hong Kong schools.
?We don?t want our child to be fed this material, said P S Ho, who joined the protest along with his wife and four-year-old daughter. ?If the initiative continues without changes, maybe we will change schools later or emigrate to another country.?
Parents with children in push chairs, secondary school students and activists joined the rally on a sweltering afternoon, carrying placards and handing out pamphlets decrying the education plan.
Police estimated 32,000 people turned out for the protest.
?Parents are concerned. We don?t want them to brainwash our children?s minds,? said Linda Wong, a member of a parent concern group and a mother of one.
While the booklet touches on some negative aspects of contemporary Chinese history including unfair land grabs by corrupt officials and a toxic milk powder scandal, it makes no mention of the 4 June crackdown on pro-democracy protesters in Beijing?s Tiananmen Square in 1989.
It also describes the US political system as having ?created social turbulence?.
?This material is given to elementary school students. They don?t have the independent thinking capabilities to judge for themselves,? said Joseph Wong, 19, a member of a youth activist group.

Yet the government has stood firm and plans to make the subject compulsory in primary schools starting in 2015 and in secondary schools the year after, although schools are encouraged to start using it earlier.
According to the curriculum guidelines, students will learn about China?s political leaders, the efforts and contributions they have made and the difficulties and challenges they face, as well as how to ?speak cautiously,? practise self-discipline and get along well with others in a rational and respectful manner.
The protest is the latest sign of growing discontent in Hong Kong over mainland China?s increasing influence 15 years after the freewheeling financial centre was returned to China.

Shakti solved part of the problem by tailoring a solar system to exactly what people like the traveling food vendor, Mr. Majid needed: a 25W solar system to light his grocery cart and power his cassette player. They then coupled tailored solutions with finance providing him with a loan he could afford to repay because he doubled his monthly income by working after dusk and attracting more customers with popular Bangla music.?
But the problems don?t stop here.
Rural customers are hard to reach. In the Bangladesh delta of the mighty Brahmaputra, Ganges and Meghna Rivers it's even tougher.? Its villages can become islands in the rainy season, when almost half the country is flooded. Other regions where the land lies lower than the plains turn into huge lakes, forcing villagers to travel by boat seven months of the year.? Serving village customers on the delta means traveling bumpy mud paths and crossing rivers ? on foot, by bike, boat and by rickshaw. It can take hours during the rainy season to reach a few customers.?

All business is rural
Shakti meets this challenge by creating rural supply chains and after sales service.? Its engineers and technicians live, work and are trained on the job in the villages.? They become part of the community, keep in close contact with their customers and make sure the solar systems are running.? If there is a problem, Shakti is onsite to solve it ? even in times of disaster.?
In the aftermath of Cyclone Sidr, Shakti branch staff members were out doing repairs within hours in areas it took days and weeks for emergency teams to reach.? For Shakti, all business is rural. ?Its field managers run 1,500 branch offices in every district in Bangladesh.? They guarantee complete service ? from installation, maintenance, repair and financing to customer care and training.?
This focus on rural service began when Grameen was founded back in 1996. It sent bright, young engineers into the hinterland to set up its first branches.? They won the trust of the villagers, trained local technicians, managed all financing, solar installations and maintenance.? This laid the groundwork for Shakti?s quality service and steady growth, but it took years to develop.?
Shakti has now set up 45 technology centers to produce and repair solar accessories. In this way production moves from the capital to the villages and solves problems of cost, logistics and rapid growth in a highly decentralized company. The centers are managed by women engineers, who ? like their male colleagues ? live, work and train in rural communities.? Of importance here is how these technology centers function as incubators for a further innovation: the village energy entrepreneur.

Kohinur, for example was trained at a technology center to become an energy entrepreneur.? She earns an income producing and repairing solar accessories, is self-employed and receives ongoing support from the technology centers for her business.? Neighbors now bring Kohinur solar lamps for minor repairs instead of contacting the Shakti branch.? The technology center engineers supervise Kohinur?s work and do quality control.?
Kohinur dropped out of school in the 8th grade, had no vocational training and no source of income, but is now able to contribute on average Taka 5,000 per month to her family?s income.? This is as much as her father earns delivering fresh fish to the shipping port in Khulna and a substantial increase in monthly income for a poor family.

A house in danger of being washed away
Kohinur's story can be the story of the 1.3 billion people around the world without electricity access. But what we hear over and over again is that renewable energy technologies like solar are expensive and the rural poor are either too poor or too difficult to serve. The Grameen Shakti story explained in the book, Green Energy for a Billion Poor? clearly shows how outdated and out of touch this line of thinking is. With over 5 million villagers enjoying solar electricity and Shakti technicians installing one thousand solar systems a day it's time our development institutions put their scarce development dollars behind initiatives such as these. No one can work miracles in a traditional rural society, but entrepreneurial companies like Shakti are proving we can do far, far better than business as usual.

Since its topical, and in "space articles" we often get real rocket scientists reading, how does the oxygen rich preburner in the RD-180 work? I don't mean the "duh" stuff like how do you adjust the mixture, but what in the world are these guys doing for metalurgy such that you can basically pipe a metal cutting torch's flame around the innards of an engine? Or is it something totally bonkers like they use nozzle style film cooling inside the pipes and stuff (which doesn't help with the turbopumps, but...)
I would assume if the russians ship working hardware to the DoD that whatever the answer is, its probably not classified.
Also I might be dense here but isn't it harder to maintain stable combustion when oxidizer rich rather than fuel rich? Or maybe its just "different" for an industry used to running fuel rich?
Do they use oxidizer rich preburner gas to cool the nozzle? I'm guessing they aren't that crazy and use the traditional nozzle coolant of fuel. Now a oxidizer regeneratively cooled nozzle would be bonkers, I don't recall anything that crazy. Maybe one of those weird solid fuel/liquid ox hybrids used liq O2 to cool the nozzle. I would imagine a pinhole leak in a oxy cooled nozzle would be a pretty spectacular failure whereas a pinhole in a fuel cooled nozzle is pretty much irrelevant until its a big enough leak to affect flow rates...
The background is that the 170/180 are the only engines I can think of off the top of my head that run oxidizer rich... every one else preburns fuel rich because a traditional welder's cutting torch is an oxidizer rich flame and putting what amounts to a cutting torch inside a engine seems a recipe for disaster. On the other hand oxidizer rich would seem to eliminate carbon/tar/gunk buildup issues. Maybe if you're stuck using heavy tarry parafiny filthy liquid fuels, like cruise ship heavy bunker oil as a fuel, the oxidizer problems are easier solved than creating a whole new fuel refining infrastructure... Would be interesting to know the design tradeoff, assuming its not just "too many bottles of vodka"

After a fairly successful worldwide debut, Samsung is bringing its supersize Samsung Galaxy Note to T-Mobile on August 8. Its big 'n' tall dimensions are the elephant in the room, an uberlarge Samsung Galaxy S II series phone that dances into tablet territory so much so that many have taken to calling the 5.3-inch Note a "phablet." I rant on this elsewhere, but let's just agree that it's a large-screen phone with a stylus that you can use to unlock some interesting-but-far-from-perfect artistic and productivity tools.
T-Mobile's version of the Galaxy Note comes with a rendition of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich built in, and rides on T-Mobile's HSPA+ 42 4G network, its fastest. S Note and S Memo apps are also on-board, with new features that expand on the power of the itty-bitty stylus. As for the rest of the phone, the Note's 8-megapixel camera, 1.5GHz dual-core processor, and 2-megapixel front-facing camera continue to do well. For most, the question of the Galaxy Note comes down its sheer size -- do you want a bigger screen you can doodle on or use to take notes, or is it simply too large and unwieldy?
Starting August 8, T-Mobile is selling the Galaxy Note for $249.99, after a $50 mail-in-rebate and with a new two-year service agreement.
Design
Which Samsung engineer accidentally spilled Miracle-Gro on a Galaxy S II Skyrocket? At 5.8 inches tall by 3.3 inches wide by only 0.37 inch thick, the black handset resembles a rounded roof shingle. The footprint is big, no doubt about it, and it fits awkwardly in my smaller-size hands. It protrudes from front and back jeans pockets, but fits fine in my purse. I'm still a bit on the fence when it comes to my whether it would be useful for me.
Operating it one-handed is a limited venture even with the special keyboard setting turned on; it might be difficult to keep a hold of the phone the bus. On the other hand, I appreciate the roomy virtual keyboard, which cuts down eye strain and gives fingers or the stylus plenty of space to hit a digital key. This could speak volumes to my lack of skill as a virtual typist, but the keyboard width didn't prevent me from making mistakes, and I eventually switched from the Samsung keyboard in my e-mail client to the Android keyboard and Swype.
Although it's a big phone, the Note is pretty easy on the eyes, and the slim build keeps it looking light and lean. As with the rest of the Galaxy series, the Note's body is made from plastic materials. This doesn't make for the particularly premium experience that I feel $250 should buy, but I can't complain about the general aesthetic. Plastic may not seem upscale, but it does offer its own brand of durability over glass parts that can shatter or paint that can chip off metal fixtures. It weighs a chunky 6.3 ounces, but that heft also lends it a greater sense of structural strength.

(Credit: Josh Miller/CNET)The Galaxy Note's crowning glory is its 5.3-inch HD Super AMOLED screen with its 1,280x800-pixel resolution (that's WXGA, by the way). Samsung's family of AMOLED screen technology always looks bright, vivid, and saturated in color. The Note's behemoth display is pretty similar, though pixel density appeared a bit lower and the image was noticeably softer and less bright than on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, which also has an HD Super AMOLED display. Photos looked crisp and alive, videos played back smoothly on the large, high-def screen, and e-books were easier to read than on smaller smartphone displays.
The rest of the phone looks a lot like others in the Galaxy S II family. You'll find a 2-megapixel front-facing camera above the screen; below it, there are the four customary touch-sensitive navigation buttons for Menu, Home, Back, and Search. The volume rocker is on the left spine, and the power button is on the right. On the bottom live the Micro-USB charging port and the hollowed-out slot for the Note's S Pen stylus. You can plug your headphones into the 3.5mm jack up top. If you're worried about losing it, the S Pen clicks firmly into place and stays there. The Galaxy Note packs an 8-megapixel camera with flash, and the microSD card slot beneath the back cover holds up to 32GB of your goods.
Android 4.0 and TouchWiz
Samsung and T-Mobile may have blessed the Galaxy Note with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, but under the layers of Samsung's customized TouchWiz interface, it looks and acts a lot more like Android 2.3 Gingerbread. One difference is that you can press the home button to see a list of recent apps pop up. You can also transfer URLs, maps, and contact info from one NFC-compatible phone to another using Android Beam (turn it on in the settings.) Since many of Ice Cream Sandwich's best new features are visual overhauls, it seems like very little has changed from Android 2.3 to Android 4.0. I personally have mixed feelings about TouchWiz, and I'm ready for a change to an Android OS layer more in line with Google's vision.
S Pen and note-taking apps
The Galaxy Note's throwback stylus can take screenshots, jot your notes, and respond to pen pressure -- all good stuff. Yet, if you never release the S Pen from its snug plastic tunnel, you won't miss out on the Note's essential smartphone features. Physically, the wand is a wisp of a thing, just 4.1 inches tall and 0.2 inch thick, with a button on the side that serves as a shortcut to perform a handful of tasks. The S Pen is reasonably comfortable in the hand, but it's so slim and light (just 0.1 ounce, rounded up) that holding it sometimes feels like grasping at air. There's also the distinct possibility that once it's unsheathed, it'd be easy to drop or misplace.
You can buy an S Pen accessory called the S Pen Holder Kit that will look just like a larger, thicker ballpoint pen. It costs $59.99 and comes with an additional S Pen. I read that as an acknowledgment that the S Pen could feel more natural in the hand.

Tap twice on the screen while holding down the S Pen button to pull up Quick Memo, a fast way to start jotting a note. You can later retrieve the memo from the more sophisticated S Memo app. Both let you draw, hand write notes, and annotate Web sites; S Memo also supports voice recordings and typed text, for instance, but it won't launch from the pen. Apps optimized for the S Pen cleverly respond to 128 different levels of pressure. Harder strokes leave thicker lines, and you can press lighter for shading. Just take care where you put your hands; the wrong placement could create unwanted pen lines.
Then there's S Note, which is new to the U.S. Galaxy Note phones. It's takes S Memo a couple of steps further with a few more flexible features, including being able to hand write mathematical formulas and turn sketched shapes into straight-lined renditions. The controls are more sophisticated, but I wish Samsung just consolidated these features into one app you can access different ways. You can read more about S Note and the S Memo widget here.
Regardless, the apps offer a great alternative to the rigidity of typing, and system integration is reasonably good. For example, you can add a handwritten Quick Memo note to a calendar event. You can write with the S Pen in almost all text fields; you turn that on when you tap the pen icon on the Samsung keyboard. Writing is a little strange at first, since there's some lag in seeing your strokes appear on the screen. While I hardly have the world's most elegant handwriting, the S Pen made it look even more scrawled. It takes a little time to pick up certain navigation shortcuts and work your way through the various apps; I found myself becoming frustrated at the beginning, and expect that I'll adapt as I grow more used to the environment.
I do like the tool for converting handwriting into text. It works better the more neatly you write, and it won't work perfectly every time. I also appreciate the undo and eraser tools in the memo apps, as well as the setting for lefties.
There's also the question of how well the S Pen does at actual writing and drawing. In other words, is it as sensitive as pen and paper, and is it a satisfying replacement? I answer that best here, but the bottom line is that I'm very particular and found myself frequently frustrated at incompletely written words, accidental button presses, and awkward writing angles.
Although I've said that the S Pen isn't necessary for using the Galaxy Note (unlike those styluses of yore), there are some advantages beyond keeping your greasy, grimy mitts off that huge smudge magnet of a screen. Samsung has programmed a pair of memo apps to work with the S Pen, and is encouraging other developers to create their own compatible apps as well.
The S Pen isn't for everyone. First there's the learning curve of creating legible notes. I also have yet to see if it can fit my particular work flow after the novelty wears off. I can, however, see how artists and people with more free-flowing thought processes might appreciate the flexibility with which they can express their ideas. I especially see the benefit of quickly, easily creating and sharing digital sketches on the fly, like these caricatures that Samsung used at CES to publicize the Note.
Features
Beyond the 4G HSPA+ network, there's Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS; text and multimedia messaging; and Android's penchant for integrating social networks into your virtually limitless address book. You'll find all of Google's usual apps and services, like Google Maps with turn-by-turn voice directions, Gmail, Search, Google Music, and YouTube, plus other basics like the music player, calculator, calendar, and clock.
Apps are a huge part of the Note's experience, especially those created for the S Pen. In addition to the aforementioned memo notes is a game called Crayon Physics. Samsung adds its own app package to the Galaxy Note, including its typical Kies Air and AllShare apps for sharing multimedia (like your photos, videos, and doodles) with your desktop and DLNA-compatible devices, respectively. There are also the Social Hub and Music Hub for organizing tools around Facebook and Twitter social networking, and listening to podcasts and tunes.

After weeks of trying to hook up with my friend Chrissy, I finally caught her home the other day and got the chance to talk to her one-on-one for a few minutes. Sadly, she?s going through a busy time right now, but at least I was able to give her my phone number and we promised to get together again when things calm down.
Mean time, I?m still boggled by our running into each other after all this time, and playing with those questions I wrote about ?coincidence? and ?fate??
You see, Chrissy and I met almost 30 years ago at a high school in the Ottawa Valley and only hung out until she went away to college in the late ?80?s. Then, despite my trying to find her, we didn?t see or hear from each other until 2 years ago when we ran met again in the Niagara area.
Now, ?coincidence? alone could easily explain this meeting because, sinse moving here in the late ?90?s, I?ve talked to enough people who?ve lived in ? or have family in ? ?the Valley? to know economics was often a big factor in their relocating to the Golden Horse Shoe. When you consider, too, that it was motocycles that sort of brought us together, it doesn?t seem like a ?big stretch? for us to have met at an event that was centred around bikes.
Of course, ?luck? or ?chance? is likely to blame for our both having bought houses in the Niagara Region and having slightly over-lapping social circles. Even my getting pushed into using the same site my computer iliterate BF used wasn?t a ?biggy? because the ebb and flow of media popularity could easily account for that.
When I think about the fact that I swore off bikes (and bikers) ages ago, that Chrissy and I bought houses on the same block, and that we?ve been unwitting neighbours for 3 or 4 years, though, I tend to think we?re pushing the boundaries of ?probability?.
It?s also tempting to consider whether ?karma? or something similar might have affected our connection because when I recall how easily we slipped in and out of each other?s lives ? without judgement or complications with other relationships ? I can almost see there having been some other-life connection. Chrissy and I have also both been through some similar ?crap? with family, and life in general, so it isn?t unthinkable that we?d be drawn to each other, perhaps by some subconscious recognition of each other?s emotional or mental states, or by some need to help or get help from each other.
Fans of ?The Secret? might also associate our attraction with the possibility of some ?magnitism? (born of ?physics? or ?psychics???) between us, or the potential for our words and thoughts to have made it possible for us to reconect. After all, I have been talking about Chrissy and my desire to find her for nearly 30 years!
It?s also worth noting that, while talking on the phone shortly after we met, my BF mentioned his bike, and I recalled having seen him (years prior) cruising ?The Lane? in the Falls on a different machine. At that moment, I specifically remembered thinking ?not my type?? ?too much trouble?? and ?nice pipes?!? So, for my 1st online message to him to have been ?nice pipes? (and for that to have led to us being in a relationship, etc.) and for him to have caused me so much ?trouble? of exactly the sort I?d imagined seems odd, indeed.
I do, however, acknowledge the likelyhood that my attraction to him, in both instances, might have been based in some deep-seated need in me or some architypical image of the sort of man I?m attracted to. I?ve also considered Carl Jung?s theory of ?synchronicity? which is, in essence (and to quote Wikipedia)? ?the experience of two or more events that are apparently causally unrelated or unlikely to occur together by chance, yet are experienced as occurring together in a meaningful manner. ?
Thus, my moving to Niagara because I had a familial and emotional connection to both towns we?ve lived in and Christine?s employment and a relational connections to the same, as well as our both having interest in bikes might have been all that was needed to ?synch? us up.
Finally, ?fate? or ?destiny? may also be to blame for the connections we?ve all made, but I tend to believe that ?choice? affects our life paths far more than some ?higher power? or cosmic predetermination, and that we can live whole lives without even being aware of any faitful forces.
Still, I can?t help feeling that Chrissy, my BF, our mutual friends, and I are all ?suposed? to be here and connected, and being anxious to see what lessons I take from it all. More than anything, though, I miss the easy-going acceptance and fun that Chrissy and I shared, and just hope that?ll be a constant in our lives.

Genomic study of Africa's hunter-gatherers elucidates human variation and ancient interbreeding
Thursday, July 26, 2012Human diversity in Africa is greater than any place else on Earth. Differing food sources, geographies, diseases and climates offered many targets for natural selection to exert powerful forces on Africans to change and adapt to their local environments. The individuals who adapted best were the most likely to reproduce and pass on their genomes to the generations who followed.
That history of inheritance is written in the DNA of modern Africans, but it takes some investigative work to interpret. In a report to be featured on the cover of the Aug. 3 issue of the journal Cell, University of Pennsylvania geneticists and their colleagues analyze the fully sequenced genomes of 15 Africans belonging to three different hunter-gatherer groups and decipher some of what these genetic codes have to say about human diversity and evolution.
The study, led by Sarah Tishkoff, a Penn Integrates Knowledge Professor with appointments in the School of Arts and Sciences' biology department and the Perelman School of Medicine's genetics department, tells several stories.
It identifies several million previously unknown genetic mutations in humans. It finds evidence that the direct ancestors of modern humans may have interbred with members of an unknown ancestral group of hominins. It suggests that different groups evolved distinctly in order to reap nutrition from local foods and defend against infectious disease. And it identifies new candidate genes that likely play a major role in making Pygmies short in stature.
"Our analysis sheds light on human evolution, because the individuals we sampled are descended from groups that may have been ancestral to all other modern humans," Tishkoff said. "A message we're seeing is that even though all the individuals we sampled are hunter-gatherers, natural selection has acted differently in these different groups."
Joining Tishkoff in the work from Penn was first author Joseph Lachance as well as Clara Elbers, Bart Ferwerda and Timothy Rebbeck. Their collaborators include Benjamin Vernot, Wenqing Fu and Joshua Akey of the University of Washington; Alain Froment of France's Mus?e de L'Homme; Jean-Marie Bodo of Cameroon's Minist?re de la Recherche Scientifique et de l'Innovation; Godfrey Lema and Thomas B. Nyambo of Tanzania's Muhimbili University College of Health Sciences; and Kun Zhang of the University of California at San Diego.
The researchers sequenced the genomes of five men from each of three hunter-gatherer groups: the Hadza and the Sandawe of Tanzania and the Western Pygmies of Cameroon. The three differ greatly from one another in appearance, in language, in the environments they occupy and in cultural practices, though the Hadza and the Sandawe live just 200 kilometers apart.
"We purposefully picked three of the most diverse hunter-gatherer groups," Tishkoff said, "because they have not been very well represented in other genome sequencing projects, which tend to focus on majority populations in Africa. This is a unique and important dataset."
The researchers used a method that involves sequencing each strand of DNA more than 60 times on average. This redundancy makes the sequencing highly accurate, giving the geneticists confidence that any mutations they identify are real and not errors. Scanning these sequences, the researchers found 13.4 million genetic variants, or locations in the genome where a single nucleotide differed from other human sequences; at the time they were discovered, 5 million were new to science.
"It was awe-inspiring," Lachance, a postdoctoral researcher, said, "to find millions of new variants that we never knew existed in our species. It's humbling but invigorating to think about how to make sense of all this diversity."
Only about 72,000 of these variants were in regions of the DNA that code for genes. The rest were in non-coding regions, which may influence how and whether genes are expressed.
"Our study underscores the importance of noncoding regions of the genome, particularly for regulating gene expression," Tishkoff said. "That has important implications for anyone doing biomedical research because, if they're only looking at the coding regions, they're missing information that may be critically important for normal human variation as well as disease susceptibility."
The researchers also used the genomes to investigate ancient human interbreeding.
Using a statistical method, the team detected partial sequences in all three populations that appear to have derived from a hominin different from Homo sapiens. Much as recent studies have found evidence that modern humans interbred with Neanderthals, these new findings suggest that the ancestors of modern humans in Africa mated with individuals from another hominin lineage. This archaic lineage appears to have diverged from the modern human lineage several hundred thousand years ago, around the same time that Neanderthals diverged from Homo sapiens.
"Fossils degrade fast in Africa so we don't have a reference genome for this ancestral lineage," Akey said, "but one of the things we're thinking is it could have been a sibling species to Neanderthals."
Evidence of interbreeding with an archaic lineage, known as introgression, was found in all three groups tested.
"Given that introgression is present in these very diverse groups," Vernot said, "I think we can now say that this seems to be a pretty universal aspect of human history."
In an additional analysis, the researchers looked for major differences among the genomes of the three groups, signs that the populations evolved differently to adapt to their specific environments. Among the variations that stood out were genes related to immune-system function, smell and taste. These findings suggest that adaptations to local diseases and local foods were important in how the groups evolved.
Finally, building on previous research from Tishkoff and colleagues that sought an explanation for why Pygmies are all short ? men standing only 4'11" on average ? the researchers looked for variants that were common in the Pygmies of Cameroon but rare or absent in the other groups. They found several genes located near these mutations that act on the pituitary gland, a "master regulator" responsible for metabolism, growth, sexual development and immunity.
"We would have never found these strong candidate genes for short stature," Lachance said, "if we hadn't looked at multiple genomic sequences from these isolated populations. It hints at the power of what you can do when you sample multiple genomes and compare them at a population scale."
Tishkoff's group plans to sequence the genomes from more Africans ? a task that new technology has made faster and cheaper than ever before ? to increase their sample size. With more genomic data, scientists will better their understanding of how evolution acted on humans throughout the last several hundred thousand years and even how certain mutations may predispose certain people to disease.
"Our study emphasizes the critically important role of next-generation genome sequencing for elucidating the genetic basis of both normal variable traits in humans as well as identifying the genetic basis of human disease risk," Tishkoff said.

The bad weather this summer has had a negative affect on the UK swift population, mentioned in a recent article on BBC News.
This follows on from a recent RSPB report which mentions that the population of swifts visiting the UK each summer to breed is nearly a third lower than it was in the mid-1990s.
Swifts are now on the amber list and birds of Conservation Concern as their numbers have declined dramatically in the past 10 years
This year's spate of bad weather has resulted in fewer flying insects for swifts to eat.
I've seen a fair few out and about this summer while working on BBC Wales Weatherman Walking, both at Burry Port and Cardiff Bay Nature Reserve but not in any great numbers.
A lack of nest sites is also causing problems as older buildingsd are being renovated and newer buildings don't provide a suitable space for swifts to nest in.

Have you ever been on a Vision Quest? Recently I traveled to Arizona for my Spirit Walk and Vision Quest, in Aravaipa Canyon, south east of Phoenix. When you're on a vision quest you're all alone. It's a school like no other; there are no classrooms, no books, and no teachers at the front of the room leading the lessons. It's just you and nature. But there is still plenty of teaching going on. How can that be? Where is the teaching coming from and how are the lessons learned?
A vision quest takes you out of your normal environment, removing you from all normal responsibilities and habitual cues (aka "distractions"). Very often you're fasting, so even the distractions of eating and digesting are removed. In nature, in silence, with no distractions for an extended period of time, your senses become heightened. This helps facilitate an altered state of awareness that isn't normally accessed. In this state of awareness a space is made where you experience thoughts you don't normally have; these types of thoughts we typically call insights, wisdom, and guidance.
Wisdom is rare and cherished because it comes from a place not normally accessed by most people in day-to-day living. We all typically know it when we hear it, but we're not always able to produce it for ourselves. Why is that? What stops the average person from being a truly wise and insightful person? What is it about wisdom that makes it so hard to come by?
The answer: Three Dragons. To access true wisdom, insight, and guidance you must navigate past three dragons on your journey. Each of these dragons is unique and formidable and each has won more battles than it's lost. These block your entrance into the realms of wisdom inherent in your mind, heart, and soul.
In his book Theory U - Leading from the Future as it Emerges, author Otto Scharmer distinguishes these dragons as the Voice of Judgment (VOJ), Voice of Cynicism (VOC), and the Voice of Fear (VOF). To access true wisdom you must do battle with each of these three dragons, or voices, and emerge victorious.
To access the creativity and wisdom available in your mind you must overcome the Voice of Judgment. This is that voice most of us are very familiar with. You know the one, the one that says "That's a stupid idea." Or, "Who do you think you are?" Or, "Play it safe and keep your head down beneath the mow line." These voices of judgment are most often automatic and largely subconscious, habitual, response patterns to anything outside the norm. Therefore, to access anything OUTSIDE the norm (like wisdom) we must be aware of this dragon and be prepared to do battle.
To access the rich depth of wisdom and joy-filled love and connectivity available in your heart, you must overcome the Voice of Cynicism. This is the voice that keeps you "safely" separate from others and the world, putting everything and everyone at arm's length. This voice is afraid to be vulnerable and sees vulnerability as a direct threat to survival. This voice says "Oh no, we already tried that before and we got hurt, remember? We ain't going there again." Or worse, "You can't trust anyone," "It's better to hurt others before they hurt you," and the infamous "It's a dog-eat-dog world out there." This voice, this dragon, will keep you separate, alone, and bitter.
And finally, to access your deepest wisdom and guidance, the wisdom and guidance of your soul, you must overcome the Voice of Fear. While the voices of judgment and cynicism are formidable, they can't hold a candle to the voice of fear. This is the ultimate dragon at the gate that goes right to your core animalistic instincts for survival. This voice strives to maintain the status quo and holds onto what you already have and know. Doing battle with this voice, this dragon, can feel like death itself. All of your deepest fears can become activated: "I'll be broke and homeless," "I'll be rejected and ridiculed," "I'll be all alone." Because some of your most powerful wisdom and insights reside in your soul, it of course has the biggest dragon to slay.
I bet you can recognize each of these voices and dragons in you. I'm sure you've done battle with each of them at some point in your life. Did you win? Or did they win? The truth is, we win some and we lose some. But the most wise, authentic, inspired and fulfilling life is marked by simply being aware and being willing to engage these battles. Whether you win or lose is not so much the point. But did you engage whole-heartedly and honorably?
These "battles" are only with ourselves. As one of my favorite trainers, T. Harv Eker has said "A warrior is one who conquers oneself." Your best "weapons" for these types of "battles" are awareness, courage, and compassion. First, be aware that these dragons, these voices will be on your path. Just being aware is half the battle itself! Second, have the courage to face them and engage them. Don't back down; know that HOW you engage is more important than winning. And third, have compassion for not only yourself, but have compassion for these aspects of yourself; have compassion for these dragons and voices. Ultimately they are far more afraid than you are - you need to step up and show them the way out of their suffering and smallness.
All this is not to say that sometimes these voices SHOULD be listened to. They really are there to protect us. From their limited perspective they think they are helping and protecting us. However, more often than not, they are way overprotective. Knowing when to listen and when to ignore is part of a discernment you can develop over time. As you get to know your voices and dragons they become more and more familiar, making them a lot easier to sort out and move on through and beyond.
Try this:
You can raise your awareness, as the first important step to winning the battle with the dragons at your gate. Take out a piece of paper, divide it into three sections and label the first section Voice of Judgment, the second section Voice of Cynicism, and the third section Voice of Fear.
Take a deep breath and ask yourself "What are some automatic judgments I often make that keep me safe and small?" And write down whatever comes up. Keep asking yourself that question until the answers stop coming. Then do the same process asking, "In what ways am I cynical and keeping everyone and everything at arms distance, staying separate and alone?" And finally ask yourself, "What are my biggest fears stopping me from truly being who I am and doing what I came here to do?"
Just asking yourself these questions and listening to yourself is an act of wisdom that will move you closer to your mojo!
