?1.25m available to develop energy-efficient computing

The government is making ?1.25m in grants available for studies that develop energy-efficiency technologies for computing and communications.

Applicants for funding will need to focus on the design and development of energy-efficient hardware and software. The remit includes studies for large-scale systems relying on computer capacity as well as studies for small-scale systems such as mobile devices and embedded chips.

The feasibility projects must be undertaken by at least two partners, one of which may be an academic institution, but must be led by a business. The projects will last from six to 18 months and can gain funding of up to 75% with a maximum of a ?100,000 grant for each project.

The competition is managed by innovation agency the Technology Strategy Board (TSB) working with the Engineering & Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and the Defence Science & Technology Laboratory (Dstl).

The TSB notes that in the past, computer and software design has focused on improved performance, but that now there is now a greater impetus towards energy-efficient systems.

"By devising more energy efficient computing devices and software, we can reduce the global energy burden of such systems and increase customer satisfaction by extending battery life, reducing device size and other measures," the agency said.

The TSB uses the example of cloud computing data centres which it says currently consume 2% of global electricity consumption and are expected to reach 5% by 2020. The TSB claims that 50% of the energy consumption of these centres is from the devices and software that they run.

The competition opens on October 8 2012 and the deadline is December 5 2012.

Spacewalking astronauts stymied by sticky bolts

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) ? Sticky bolts proved too much for spacewalking astronauts Thursday, forcing them to leave a new power-switching box dangling from the International Space Station instead of firmly bolted down.

NASA scrambled to reduce the power demands of the orbiting lab and balance the electrical load, while mapping out a plan that could have the astronauts going back out as early as next week to tackle the problem.

It was a major disappointment for NASA's Sunita Williams and Japan's Akihiko Hoshide, who spent hours struggling with the bolts. They used all sorts of tools and tactics as the spacewalk went into overtime, but nothing worked.

With time running out, Mission Control finally told them to tie down the box and head inside.

"We'll figure this out another day," Mission Control radioed.

Thursday's spacewalk was supposed to last 6? hours but stretched past eight hours. It ended up in NASA's top 10 list for longest spacewalks ? at the No. 3 spot.

The power router is one of four, and NASA stressed that the other three are working fine. Nonetheless, electrical usage will need to be closely monitored at the 260-mile-high lab given Thursday's failed effort.

"The team may have to manage power loads a little bit, but this is familiar territory," said NASA's space station program manager, Mike Suffredini. "We'll be able to deal with that while we decide what our next plan is."

While the space station remains in stable condition, NASA would like to take another crack at securing the box as soon as possible ? perhaps next week ? because of the mid-September departure of half the six-member crew, including the second U.S. astronaut, who ran the robot arm Thursday from inside the station. And the longer this situation goes on, the more vulnerable the space station is to additional failures, Suffredini noted.

Until the problem is resolved, the space station is able to draw power from just three-quarters of its solar wings ? six instead of all eight.

The old switch box started acting up last fall, and NASA decided to replace it before it failed. This was the first spacewalk by Americans since the final shuttle flight a year ago.

Williams and Hoshide had trouble getting the old unit out because of two sticky bolts, and they found metal shavings in the sockets. They squirted in compressed nitrogen gas to clear the holes, and some debris came out. But still, the main bolt would not go in properly; the companion bolt was left undone.

The frustration mounted as the minutes and hours ticked by. At one point, Mission Control radioed, "We've tried almost every backup we have on this stupid bolt."

At a news conference later in the day, NASA officials said possible solutions might involve lubricating the thick, sturdy bolts or applying more torque.

Putting in a new switching box was the No. 1 priority of the spacewalk. In separate work, the astronauts managed to hook up one power cable and get another cable halfway connected. They never got around to replacing a bad camera on the space station's big robotic arm.

Mission Control did its best to cheer up the spacewalkers as they re-entered the space station. "You guys are rock stars, just so you know," Mission Control said.

It was the second spacewalk in less than two weeks. On Aug. 20, two Russians worked outside the orbiting complex, installing shields to protect against micrometeorite strikes.

It's no longer common for astronauts to step into the vacuum of space. That's because after almost 14 years, the space station is virtually complete. Plus NASA's shuttles are retired and now museum pieces.

Williams is the lone woman at the space station. She and Hoshide arrived a month ago, launching from Kazakhstan aboard a Russian rocket.

This past summer has been a tough year for those trying to grow tomatoes around Thessaloniki and here in Halkidiki. I can?t speak for the rest of Greece but many homeowners complained of a cold Spring followed by an unrelenting hot summer and a bug that would eat the tomato plants from inside out.

My parents came here late and some of the t0mato crop survived and we?re enjoying the fruits of their labours now with deep red, sweet, meat yet juicy tomatoes that are remarkably delicious all on their own. Our summer home is just a few minutes walk from the sea and I?m sure that sea breeze has licked these tomatoes.

Tomatoes are one of the pillars of making a good Greek salad. If you?re going to make a Greek salad (us Greeks call it a Horiatiki or Village) you should make it now while tomatoes are in season. I?ve posted on a proper Greek Salad before but I wanted to share this stylized version of it?.there?s some elevation and I wanted to say thank you to Acropolis Organics who?s been providing the olive oil for the past three Greek Supper Clubs I?ve organized.

Acropolis Organics brings you the best of Cretan olive oil from the Kissamos region of Chania and this Toronto-based company has been remarkable in distributing its oil across Canada. I?ve named this version of the Greek salad ?Acropolis? as this means the highest point in a village, town or city.

This Greek salad is fancy but still very easy to reproduce and all the ingredients are the same: ripe, in season tomatoes, green peppers, sweet red onions, cucumbers, Kalamata olives and Greek extra-virgin olive oil. Some sea salt, Feta cheese (of course its Greek) and dried Greek oregano and you?ve completed your Greek salad.

To reproduce the Acropolis Greek salad first cut your tomatoes into wedges and lay your foundation. Next up, cut your cucumbers into 1/2 inch thick sticks and lay on top of the tomatoes. Now cut your peppers into slender slices and lay those on top. Season with sea salt, gently place your sliced onions and olives on the salad and drizzle with extra-virgin olive oil and sprinkle dried Greek oregano.

The only extra ingredient you may need is some good crusty bread to mop-up the sauce created from the juices of the vegetables and the olive oil. Go on?.dunk away?its the Greek thing to do!

Both employers and workers need to know the law of Workers? Compensation. Not knowing your rights and responsibilities can be costly.

1. Remember that Workers? Comp covers not only accidental injuries on the job, but also occupational diseases. For example, neck problems are common for dental hygienists, and shoulder problems are common for construction workers who do a lot of overhead work.
2. Not all workplace injuries are covered by Workers? Comp. The injuries must be ?accidental,? meaning something out of the ordinary work routine happened.
3. If you were partly at fault for your injury, it does not necessarily defeat your claim.
4. To keep your claim alive, it is essential to report your injury to your employer (supervisor will do) as soon as possible. A written or email report or notice is best. You must also file a Form 18 with the N.C. Industrial Commission, which can be found at the Industrial Commission?s website (www.ic.nc.gov). If a Form 18 is not filed within 2 years of your injury, you lose your right to pursue the claim.
5. Once you have healed as much as you are going to (called maximum medical improvement), you may have choices about how to settle the permanent disability part of your case. The insurance company will not tell you about those choices; they will send you the paperwork for the one they prefer, which will be the one least expensive for them.
6. If your condition gets worse and you haven?t settled in a way that closes your case, you have two years from the last check or last medical care to re-open your case for additional compensation and/or medical care. If you wait past that period to file the necessary form with the Industrial Commission, you lose your rights.

For Employers
1. The N.C. Industrial Commission recently began a crackdown on employers who are required to carry Workers? Comp insurance, but who do not. A business is required to have insurance if it has 3 or more employees, regardless whether they are full-time or part-time.
2. Businesses cannot avoid having to carry Workers? Comp insurance by calling employees independent contractors. If a worker works entirely for you, uses your tools, works hours that you set, and gets specific directions from you, he is likely an employee (legally speaking), regardless what you call him.
3. If your business hires subcontractors, be sure subs provide you a certificate of their own Workers? Comp policy. If your sub is hurt and doesn?t have her own insurance policy, she probably has a claim against your company?s policy.
4. For many businesses, buying a Workers? Comp insurance policy may not be as expensive as they think. Premiums are based on payroll and on the type of work. Insurance is expensive in lines of work where injuries occur often, like construction, home health care, auto repair, etc. Others, like those doing office or customer service work, tech companies, and retail businesses without heavy lifting, may find premiums are not as expensive as they may think.
5. When getting a quote for Workers? Comp insurance for your business, ask your agent to quote it with and without covering you as the owner. Many times the extra cost to cover the owner is minimal, and makes economic sense. If not, at least you are making an informed choice.

Haven't seen him in almost 2 year's then BOOM - He's HOME ...

Almost 2 year's ago, my AH, packed up and left me
Got divorced while he moved 2,000 miles away
It's been a ride to say the least
He finally got sober & he's been sober now for 8 month's

Last night he knocked on my back door
I stood my ground's, umm, some might say "Biotche"
I unleashed my bottled up- thought's, feeling's, emotion's
Didn't sleep at all - Deep gut cried all night long

I believe it's all in the plan - Don't know why or how come
But I owned it

Tonight, we had dinner together
He still lives with guilt, shame and major denial.
I really feel like Im a grade or 2 ahead of him, in "recovery"
I was surprised he hasnt learned more about "himself" - I
would of thought, after 2 rehabs and nightly AA meetings, he would
of been farther than where he is at today. That surprised me!!

I felt like more like his "Alanon" counselor more than anything else
There was time's when my gut hurt, I shed alot of tear's
I told him, we could be friend's, but as far as getting
back together. It is not time, and dont know if it will ever be....

He asked me if he could move home! - That made my head spin!!

He's not made amend's to my children
And I will never put a man before my children ever again
I told him, it's up to him and God, not me
Im done fixing things - There was issues with him and my daughter
And those issues, run deep in my soul and her's

Honestly, alot of mixed feeling's, once again, hard to say good-bye
but atleast now, I have truely let go and letting God
and as of today, we parted as friends

I do love him, but I know after 2 days of living with him
I would more than likely would be sitting in the county jail

If he passes thru again, if the timing is right, we will have dinner again
He is a bit slower thinking and he did get side tracked a few times
I had to pull his train of thought, to finish the conversation a few times
Made me realize - how much I love my dogs and my peaceful little
home.

It hurt - It really hurt - It hurt to keep my hands in my pocket
and not whip out my "fixing" tools - The sad face, The lonely stare,
The wet tears - that he had on his face. Was freaking hard to look
at - Made my gut & heart hurt

One of my gf's was around, she got mad at me, and said how
can you talk to him like that, after he just has told you he was sorry??
I told her, Im done pussyfooting around. Done that for too many years.
It is what it is......She has been thru Alanon too, thought she would
of understood - How messed up this stuff can be.....?????

This time, I told him - See you later ~ Without a kiss - just a warm hug

Amends Done - Lets turn the page & move on......

I learned to follow my gut, because it's the only thing on me, that
hasnt been played with........and it worked!!!
Not easy..but forward

Paralyzed Veterans of America, Disabled American Veterans, and Military Order of the Purple Heart are three congressionally chartered veterans service organizations that support sports and recreation programs for military veterans for rehabilitation and fitness.

Some of the athletes that benefit from their programs are going to the London 2012 Paralympic Games that begin Wednesday and end Sept. 9.

PVA?s programs include the PVA Sports 32nd National Veterans Wheelchair Games that co-hosted 540 disabled U.S. military veteran athletes in June in Richmond, Va., with the Department of Veterans Affairs. The multi-event sports rehabilitation program is open to vets who use wheelchairs for sports competition due to spinal cord injuries, amputations or certain neurological problems, and who receive care at VA medical facilities or military treatment centers.

Competition includes air guns, archery, basketball, bowling, field, hand-cycling, nine-ball, motorized wheelchair relay, power soccer, quad rugby, softball, swimming, table tennis, track and field, trapshooting, weightlifting and wheelchair slalom.

Founded in 1946, PVA advocates for the rights of veterans and non-veterans who have disabilities, and focuses on spinal cord injury and disease. There are about 19,000 members.

PVA has a PVA-AWBA Bowling Tournament Series, a PVA-NWPA Billiards Tournament Series, a PVA Bass Tour, the PVA National Trapshoot and air rifle-air pistol competitions in locations all over the country. As part of the PVA Fitness and Wellness Program, the Paralyzed Veterans Racing Team has upcoming competitions in the Tour de La France in South Carolina; in the Pensacola Cycling Classic and in the Rims on the Run in Florida; and in the Army Ten Miler in Washington, D.C. FAA to study use of electronics on planes

It's going to be a while before airline passengers can use iPads and other electronic devices during the whole flight.

The Federal Aviation Administration says it's forming a committee to study the issue. But its plan suggests the committee's work won't be done until March at the earliest.

The committee will give a recommendation to the FAA, which will make the final decision about any changes. The FAA says allowing cell phone use during flights isn't under consideration.

Airlines currently ban electronic devices until the plane reaches 10,000 feet. They have to be put away before landing, too.

In March, the FAA raised hopes that it might loosen rules for electronic devices by saying it would study ways to test them.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? Republican presidential contender Mitt Romney will attend his wife's speech to the Republican National Convention Tuesday night.

Ann Romney confirmed her husband's plans while speaking to reporters Tuesday morning as the couple flew from Boston to the convention site in Tampa, Fla.

She says her husband initially wasn't scheduled to attend her prime-time speech, but that changes to the convention schedule made it possible. She said that "it's going to be fun for him to be there."

Romney delivers his convention speech Thursday night.

The pair spent much of the weekend rehearsing their addresses together near their New Hampshire summer home.

?The Texan Who Conquered Russia? Van Cliburn, who won the first Tchaikovsky Piano Competition at the height of the Cold War, has been diagnosed with advanced bone cancer.

?The 78-year-old piano legend is currently ?resting comfortably at his Texas home under excellent care, his spirits are high,? his long-time friend and publicist Mary Lou Falcone is quoted as saying.

The piano legend has played for international heads of states and for every American President since Harry Truman.

He started taking piano lessons from his mother at the age of 3. His debut with the Houston Symphony Orchestra took place when the prodigy was only 12-years-old. Cliburn studied at Juilliard, won the famed Leventritt Competition and performed with a number of orchestras across the country.

But a real breakthrough in his career came in 1958 when the 23-year-old pianist won one of the world?s most prestigious contests, the first International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow.

Since then he has sold out concerts, broke record sales and even prompted an Elvis Presley fan club to change its name to his.

Tired of years of stardom, in the late 1970s Cliburn took a sabbatical, feeling emotionally drained from endless touring. He moved from New York to Fort Worth, and has been living there ever since.

He began playing publicly again in the late 1980s. Until recently he practiced daily and performed limited engagements.

Cliburn won a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004, and was presented with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2003.

Divorced parents in hostile relationships use technology to sabotage communication

ScienceDaily (Aug. 27, 2012) ? Separated and divorced couples are increasingly using emails, texting and social media to communicate with their ex-partners about their children. However, when ex-spouses use that technology to withhold or manipulate information, the children are the ones who suffer most, according to a University of Missouri family studies expert. A new study suggests divorce counselors should teach separated parents effective ways to use communication technology in order to maintain healthy environments for their children.

Lawrence Ganong, a professor of human development and family studies at MU, found that ex-partners who were cooperative with one another used emails and texting to facilitate effective co-parenting, while couples who did not get along used communication technology to avoid confrontations and control their former partners' access to their children.

"Technology makes it easier for divorced couples to get along, and it also makes it easier for them not to get along," said Ganong, who also is a professor of nursing at MU. "Parents who use technology effectively can make co-parenting easier, which places less stress on the children. Parents who use communication technology to manipulate or withhold information from the other parent can cause pain to the child."

Ganong and his colleagues interviewed 49 divorced parents individually about the quality of their relationships with their ex-partners.

Parents who had cooperative relationships saw communication technology (email, texting) as an effective tool to coordinate exchanges of their children, and some even used online calendars to share information about their children's activities. However, separated parents who had hostile relationships used the same technology to manipulate their ex-spouses and limit communication. For example, some parents in the study pretended they never received emails from their former partners. Regardless of how the couples got along, nearly all of the divorced parents used communication technology to maintain household boundaries and establish records of decisions.

When divorces end with some hostility between the parents, Ganong suggests that divorce counselors focus on teaching the couples effective ways to use technology to communicate with one another. Doing so will help children transition more smoothly between the two homes and keep them from being caught in the middle of their parents' conflicts, he said.

"Parents who are hostile need to set their feelings aside and understand that they need to communicate effectively in order to protect the emotional well-being of their children," Ganong said. "Email is a great resource for hostile parents who can't talk face-to-face. They can communicate essential information while editing what they say to avoid conflict. Also, the parents have a record of what was agreed upon."

Ganong is a professor in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies in the College of Human Environmental Sciences and also is a professor in the Sinclair School of Nursing.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Jairo Arrieta scored two goals and the Columbus Crew earned a 4-3 victory over the New England Revolution on Saturday.

Arrieta finished a long pass from Tony Tchani in the 86th minute.

Lee Nguyen tied it at 3-3 for New England (6-14-5) in the 81st minute with a penalty kick against rookie keeper Matt Lampson.

The Crew (10-8-6) are 2-0-2 in the past four games. They trailed 2-0 after goals by Ryan Guy in the 17th minute and Jerry Bengtson in the 23rd.

Federico Higuain made it 2-1 three minutes later with a 28-yard free kick.

Arrieta tied it in the 32nd and another Higuain free kick gave the Crew a 3-2 lead.

Higuain has three goals and three assists in three games since joining the Crew.

IMPACT 3, UNITED 0

MONTREAL (AP) - Patrice Bernier scored from the penalty spot and added another goal late in the second half and Montreal defeated D.C. United.

The victory extended the Impact's winning streak to five games and moved the club to within a point of the fifth-place United for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

D.C., which hasn't won back-to-back games since late May, has three games in hand.

Marco Di Vaio also scored for Montreal (12-13-3).

United fell to 12-9-4 on the season.
