Funny top ten lists and the new theory of humor

Although fun are top ten lists are a relatively new form of humor, have used various theories about the nature of humor for thousands of years. Beginning with the ancient Greek philosophers, well over a hundred theories have been proposed to explain exactly why we find certain things funny. So far, however, none of these theories never as fully satisfactory explanation has been accepted.

However, the British evolutionary theorist thinks Alastair Clark thatfinally has a universal theory of humor, which he calls the pattern recognition theory.

What did you say old boy?

In the preamble to its new theory, Clarke makes several related points. First, our ability to immediately identify the different models of the natural world proves to be a great advantage for the survival and progress of mankind. Second, the language on the same innate ability to quickly identify basicModels.

Finally, humor can not be explained in terms of content and subject matter. This is supported by the fact that different types of public (male against female, young against old) often respond differently, the content itself and the object shown.

Before you look at the exact text that Clarke uses to describe his theory, keep in mind that the Brits have always been better known for their strange way of speaking, her sense of humor. Clarkesingle sentence explained his new theory of pattern recognition serves as further evidence of this trend: "Humor occurs when the brain recognizes a pattern that surprises, and this recognition is rewarded with the experience of a humorous response."

Probably we should be thankful that Clarke did not attempt to explain why sex so much fun. In fact, his theory is very fascinating, but his choice of words makes the explanation of his theory rather difficult toto follow.

The new theory in English translation.

The confusion arises from these eight words: "the brain recognizes a pattern that surprises him." Although this statement may not be technically correct to say, enough of the story.

If you are willing to allow sufficient time to close Clarke various examples and explanations to spend study, it is clear that the definition should be expanded to say something like this: Take something that should be fun, if aunlikely situation, or shocking, we compare our notion of something else, and I'm surprised to see a similarity between the two images.

The feeling of laughter that follows is the natural way to reward us with success, similarities that could one day save our lives seen.

Maybe this is helping, for example. A young woman (who has a mental picture of what is going on, as his birth), comedian Carol Burnett is said that "the birth as you pull your Upper lip over his head. "The young woman burst into laughter. What causes this reaction?

According to the theory of pattern recognition, the young wife found themselves in the situation shocking to hear, to describe something a comedian, can never expect this to be heard in public. His surprise at the sight of the similarity between the idea of ??the party represented by Burnett, and already stored in his brain, causing a burst of laughter.

WhyHumor> work this way? According to Clarke, the humor is just one of many cognitive functions and has nothing to do with comedy. It is an integral part of the same survival mechanism that we interpret the patterns quickly, which could pose a threat to actually help our lives. Therefore, humor is an important contribution to our survival and success as a species.

What did you expect evolutionary theorist would say?

I say old chap, what about the top ten funLists?

In the case of the top-ten lists are funny, others mental images may be available for comparison. The first image is generated from the title of the list. The next group are the voices ironically states that make up the body creates the list. The last image is one that leads the reader into his mind on the subject. Each time the reader is surprised by the similarity between a series of paintings is a certain element to be as funny.

Thoughif the reader has no experience can not use a particular title or topic in the list, then mental images are compared for similarities. And no wonder, awards (or answers funny!) Outputs. The author of this list sneak up on other career options to consider, while the survival of the human race will be left in the balance sheet.

Pattern recognition, the new theory are evidence of double time and critical analysis? This is difficult to predict. First, many otherattractive theories of humor have come and gone.

Intelligent comedy writers can be themselves a question very similar: funny top ten lists can now very popular, but where they happen in ten or twenty years? Not surprisingly, the author hopes that it still laughs over the last ten!
