A Few Characteristics of Emotionally Abusive Men

It can be extremely difficult to recognize abuse, especially when one is blinded by love and forgiveness. While being sympathetic and agreeable are great aspects to a healthy relationship, sometimes it becomes easy to get stuck in a situation where you realize you just aren?t happy anymore but may not be sure what to do.

This post attempts to describe a few characteristics of emotionally abusive men and in no particular order, they are as follows:

  • Emotionally abusive men are typically the type of men who always need to be in control.
  • They will become jealous and possessive without reason and have mood swings that seem to come out of nowhere.
  • These men will manipulate by saying things like ?you?re crazy? so they don?t have to take the blame for their actions.
  • Emotional abuse typically rears its head in the form of an imbalance in power; warning signs may be a feeling that your life isn?t being fulfilled or you ?never can get a word in.?
  • Abusers of all types like to ?put you in your place? by making you feel as though you cannot find anyone else.
  • It is very common for abusers to check your private emails and social networking sites without asking and then become angry when they find something they think is ?evidence? of cheating.
  • Sometimes recognizing the difference between an abusive and a healthy relationship takes therapy, not just for the abuser but for the person being abused, as well.
  • Even if you did something ?hurtful?, ?mean?, or ?wrong?, this does not make it okay for someone to abuse you. This also very common with abusive men.
  • Intentionally hurting someone else?s? feelings or trying to embarrass them is a form of abuse, because it puts them in a position where they may be viewed as less valuable.
  • They may set out to punish you in several ways.
  • They are completely disrespectful and completely disregard your rights, feelings and opinions.
  • They have a recurring history of abuse in the relationships they?ve had
  • What may start as verbal abuse can over time become physical abuse, if the issues are not resolved.

?

Keep in mind, there is a big difference between emotional abuse and arguments; disagreements happen in any healthy relationship, its how each party reacts to them that makes the difference.

Please Note:

Domestic violence is not acceptable and should not be tolerated whether the?victim is male or female. Every person has the right to live a life free from violence.

France says Syria situation stagnant, no positive signs

PARIS (Reuters) - The French foreign minister said on Thursday there was no sign the Syrian crisis was going to be resolved anytime soon, in contrast to his prediction last month that the end was near for President Bashar al-Assad.

"Things are not moving. The solution that we had hoped for, and by that I mean the fall of Bashar and the arrival of the coalition to power, has not happened," Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said in his annual New Year's address to the press.

The uprising against Assad's rule is now in its 22nd month. More than 60,000 Syrians have been killed and another 650,000 are now refugees abroad, according to the United Nations.

France, a former colonial ruler of Syria, has been one of the most vocal backers of the rebels trying to topple Assad and was the first to recognize the opposition coalition.

Fabius told RFI radio in December "the end is nearing" for Assad. On Thursday, he said international mediation and discussions about the crisis that began in March 2011 were not getting anywhere.

"There are no recent positive signs," he said.

He said Syrian opposition leaders and representatives of some 50 nations and organizations would meet in Paris on January 28 to discuss how to fulfill previous commitments. He did not elaborate.

While France has ruled out sending the rebels weapons, it has pushed the European Union to review its arms embargo.

Syrian state television showed footage of Assad at a mosque service on Thursday celebrating the birth of Prophet Mohammad.

Dressed in a suit and clean-shaven, the president and Syrian officials sat down for the service. Assad then shook hands with government members and smiled but did not make a speech.

Paris and other Western allies have so far failed to convince Russia and China, who have continued to support Assad, to change their stance.

On Tuesday, Saudi Arabia's foreign minister scoffed at the idea of a negotiated settlement to the crisis.

Apple pulls 500px photo app over nudity concerns

4 hrs.

Apple has pulled two popular photography apps from the iOS app store, reportedly because the company found it too easy to find nude images ? though, notably, not pornographic ones. 500px, whose apps were removed, is resubmitting them with adjustments, but Apple is already being criticized for this seemingly arbitrary policy.

The apps were taken down Tuesday morning, following discussions between 500px and Apple relating to a new version of the app. With nearly a million downloads at the time of the takedown, 500px's main app was a popular way to share photos online ? and not not a new one, either. The version Apple removed was functionally much the same as the one approved back?in October of 2011.

500px cofounder Evgeny Tchebotarev told TechCrunch that an Apple reviewer rejected their proposed update on the grounds that it let users search for nude photos. In fact, the app defaults to a safe search mode that can only be disabled via the main website.

Furthermore, the nude photos that one might search for are of the art variety, not porn. "We don?t allow pornographic images. If something is purely pornographic, it?s against our terms and it?s deleted," Tchebotarev?said.

On Twitter and at various blogs and news websites, Apple came under fire almost immediately. Among others, the company's?own Safari Web browser app can be used to find explicit images extremely easily.

It's not the first time Apple has been attacked for what people view as its Puritanical restrictions on apps. Web browsers in the app store are age-restricted because they could be used to find adult material, and the company has also removed what it feels are adult titles from its bookstore, prompting widespread criticism.

Tchebotarev took to Twitter to say that his company is hoping to get its?iOS app back online soon, presumably after some Apple-suggested adjustments have been made.

UPDATE 5:21PM: An Apple representative tells GigaOM that there were complaints of child pornography, although the CEO denies this was mentioned to them:

"The app was removed from the App Store for featuring pornographic images and material, a clear violation of our guidelines. We also received customer complaints about possible child pornography."

If you?re lucky, you may even be invited to play a bar-wide game of Catch Phrase.

2. Mickey?s Irish Pub, 50 S.E. Windfield Parkway, Waukee

Located on the corner of a strip mall in the far western suburb, Mickey?s Irish Pub is the type of place that can be everything to everyone, including board game fans. Mickey?s has several game options, including Apples to Apples and Cranium, to make the typical night out into something more challenging and less typical.

3. The Fremont, 1030 E. Ninth St.

With booths built specifically for those looking for a game of checkers or even Scrabble, The Fremont is an almost hidden board game player?s dream. Just ask at the bar and a veritable treasure trove of games are at your fingertips. Dell XPS One 27 Touch

The Dell XPS One 27 Touch ($2,599.99 list) is a high-end all-in-one desktop PC that gets Windows 8 right. It starts off by helping you learn how to use the new operating system (and let's face it, Win 8 is new to most people); plus its touch interface makes sense in the new tiled Start screen environment. Add a speedy Core i7 processor and feature set that lets you run faster and farther than other all-in-one PCs, and you'll see why we chose the Dell XPS One 27 Touch as our new high-end all-in-one desktop Editors' Choice, sharing the title with the Apple iMac 27-inch (Late 2012). It has the power, it has the features, and it's got the touch.

Design and Features
From the front, the XPS One 27 Touch looks a lot like Dell's older non-touch model, at least until you adjust its height. Both systems sport 27-inch 2,560 by 1,440 (a.k.a., QHD) screens. Per its moniker, the XPS One 27 Touch has a 10-finger capacitive touch screen built into its chassis. The most prominent difference between the two is apparent when you look at the system from the side: The XPS One 27 Touch has a two-hinge support arm that not only governs tilt, but also allows a range of height adjustment, which is more versatile than a single-hinge arm that doesn't have height adjustments. The dual-hinge design also allows you to lean the screen way back for easier hands-on use. This is similar to systems like the Lenovo A720, which also tilts far back.

The XPS One 27 Touch's power cord still connects directly to the unit, eschewing the need for an external power brick (a good thing). You may wish to compare this system's styling (and certainly its price tag) to the iMac 27-inch (Late 2012). The iMac is certainly more svelte, due to its thinner chassis and lack of an optical drive, but the XPS One 27 Touch holds up fine due to its height adjustment and minimalist styling. If you want more outr? styling, then possibly systems like the Vizio 27-inch All-in-One PC (CA27-A1) would be more to your liking (and less expensive, though less quick as well).

The front of the system is where all the action happens. The bezel around the screen is glossy black, while the speaker "chin" below the screen sports a neutral gray color. These features will blend into the background when the system is in operation, as the 27-inch screen is bright and vivid. Blu-ray movies and online videos present well on the screen. We recommend you choose "no" when the pre-installed PowerDVD program asks to reduce the resolution to 1080p (1,920 by 1,080) to match the output from Blu-ray movies (the system is powerful enough to scale 1080p video up to the full screen resolution).

The screen is glossy, helping color accuracy, but the glossy finish also contributed to inadvertent reflections, particularly when viewing dark movie scenes or monochromatic desktop backgrounds. The XPS One 27 Touch has a row of backlit soft buttons below the screen that let you change inputs to the HDMI in port, eject the disc, or to turn the screen off entirely. The HDMI in port lets you connect additional sources like game consoles and will let you continue to use the screen after the internal PC components are obsolete. The HDMI out port lets you hook the system up to a larger screen HDTV, or use another monitor with the system for a multi-monitor multitasking setup.

The system's six USB 3.0 ports aren't blue, as they are on most laptops and desktops, but they are all compliant with the fast USB 3.0 standard. This means you don't have to worry about plugging your hard drive or external SSD in the "wrong" (i.e., slower) port. There's an SD card reader on the side for your digital snapshots. The system's Ethernet port is the remaining external connector, but you don't have to use wired Ethernet with the XPS One 27 Touch: The system comes with Bluetooth and 2.4GHz and 5 GHz 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi, and the included keyboard and mouse are wireless.

Windows 8 is best used on a touch-screen system, so it's no surprise that Windows 8 works well on the XPS One 27 Touch. The Start screen's tiles come up quickly, and it's easy to swipe, twist, and tap on the large seamless glass panel. You can bring up charms and use other Windows 8 UI commands with a swipe of the finger on the touch screen.

Aside from the standard group of Microsoft apps, Dell pre-loads Amazon (the store), Kindle (the reading app), Dell Shop (buying hard goods from Dell), Skype, Movie Maker, Photo Gallery, Cyberlink Media Suite (PowerDVD), and a link to download or activate Office. The fact that all of these apps are on the Start screen helps to keep the XPS One 27's desktop mode uncluttered. You'll also find a Getting Started with Windows 8 app on the Start screen, which is a great help to the millions of folks out there that haven't used Windows 8 until now.

Windows 8 is reasonably easy to navigate, once you unlearn many of the shortcuts you learned for XP, 7, et al. For example, the Getting Started app helps you learn how to use the Charms bar and switch between apps. You can still use the keyboard and mouse to navigate Windows, but the touch screen is better when you're on the Start screen. The configuration we looked at comes with a one-year subscription to McAfee Security Center as well as a one-year warranty.

The system comes with a high-end Intel Core i7 processor, 16GB of memory, Nvidia GeForce GT 640M graphics, and a 2 TB hard drive with 32GB mSATA supplemental cache drive. The cache drive helps speed operations, plus 2TB is plenty of storage space for an average family (or one determined downloader). 16GB is a massive amount of system memory. Capacities this large used to be reserved for video editors and people working on huge photo projects. For the consumer power user, 16GB means that you can keep lots of apps open and active simultaneously (like having 50 browser tabs open, viewing a photo library, and playing World of Warcraft simultaneously).

Performance
Dell XPS One 27 Touch The XPS One 27 Touch has plenty of power. The Intel Core i7-3770S processor and Nvidia GeForce GT 640M graphics combine to give a power user a system that won't shrink from doing real work. It can handle moderate gaming duties, as shown by its 38 frames-per-second (fps) score at Aliens Vs. Predator and 41 fps score the Heaven benchmark test (both at medium quality settings). Handbrake is quick as well, with a score of 34 seconds, second only to the (slightly) quicker Apple iMac 27-inch (32 seconds). The XPS One 27 Touch is in a similar race on the Photoshop CS6 test, coming in a second ahead of the iMac (3:15).

Both the iMac and the XPS XPS One 27 Touch have hybrid-style drives, though the iMac's Fusion drive works in a fundamentally different manner than the Dell's Intel SRT setup. Regardless, the end result is a system much faster overall than less expensive high-end touch screen all-in-one PCs like the Acer Aspire 7600U (A7600U-UR308).

The Dell XPS One 27 Touch is close to the pinnacle of all-in-one desktops, with a price tag to match. With a Blu-ray player, higher resolution than HD screen, and high-end power, the Dell XPS One 27 Touch is a great choice for users who want to use Windows 8 now, or those in the market for a high-end all-in-one that is not an iMac. The iMac we reviewed is pricier and has higher-end graphics so it's got better 3D numbers, but the XPS One 27 Touch is lock in step with the iMac on the multimedia tests. The XPS One 27 Touch the closest thing we have seen a perfect Windows 8 PC.

NASA'S Webb Telescope team completes optical milestone

Jan. 22, 2013 ? Engineers working on NASA's James Webb Space Telescope met another milestone recently with they completed performance testing on the observatory's aft-optics subsystem at Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp's facilities in Boulder, Colo. Ball is the principal subcontractor to Northrop Grumman for the optical technology and lightweight mirror system.

"Completing Aft Optics System performance testing is significant because it means all of the telescope's mirror systems are ready for integration and testing," said Lee Feinberg, NASA Optical Telescope Element Manager for the James Webb Space Telescope at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md.

Since last May, the AOS has undergone a series of thermal, vibration and cryogenic testing to demonstrate that it can withstand the rigorous vibration environment of the rocket launch and remain precisely aligned in order to function at the extremely cold temperatures in space. The AOS will remain at Ball Aerospace to be used in integrated testing with the flight actuator drive unit and AOS source plate assembly. The AOS is the final optical subsystem in the Webb's Optical Telescope Element to complete integration and test activities at Ball Aerospace.

"Each optical element that Ball Aerospace builds for the Webb is extremely sophisticated," said David L. Taylor, Ball Aerospace's president and chief executive officer. "The successful completion of another milestone brings us one day closer to the launch of NASA's next major space observatory."

The AOS is a precision beryllium rectangular optical bench that houses the tertiary and the fine steering mirror installed at the center of Webb's primary mirror. The AOS is surrounded by a shroud that eliminates stray light, and two large radiator panels that keep the assembly cold. This subsystem collects and focuses the light from the secondary mirror and feeds it into the science instruments.

In September 2012, Ball began the process of shipping the finished Webb primary mirrors to NASA Goddard. The remaining mirrors will arrive at Goddard in 2013, awaiting telescope integration in 2015. The Webb is on track for an October 2018 liftoff.

The James Webb Space Telescope is the world's next-generation space observatory and successor to the Hubble Space Telescope. The most powerful space telescope ever built, Webb will observe the most distant objects in the universe, provide images of the very first galaxies ever formed and see unexplored planets around distant stars. The Webb Telescope is a joint project of NASA, the European Space Agency and the Canadian Space Agency.

Blood Test Might Spot High-Risk Breast Cancer Genes ... - Health.com

CE25583WW FISH BCR abl gene Blood Test Might Spot High Risk Breast Cancer Genes

TUESDAY, Jan. 22 (HealthDay News) ? A new blood-based genetic test may predict the presence of dangerous BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutations in women, a new study finds.

These mutations significantly boost the risk for breast or ovarian cancer, which often develop at an early age in women with the mutations.

The screen could provide a quick, affordable alternative to current genetic testing and may help women and their doctors make decisions about ways to reduce cancer risk, according to the authors of the study, published Jan. 22 in the journal Cancer Prevention Research.

?The current tool for mutation detection is gene sequencing [mapping], which is expensive, time-consuming and, in many cases, lacking clear and decisive clinical decision-making information,? study author Dr. Asher Salmon, a breast cancer specialist at the Hadassah Hebrew University Medical Center in Israel, explained in a journal news release.

?In many cases, the current sequencing tool identifies a mutation, but we do not know if the mutation is neutral or harmful,? Salmon noted.

The researchers developed the multiple gene expression profile test after analyzing mutated BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes from blood samples taken from otherwise healthy women. They said that the test is highly accurate, affordable and quick.

?In wealthy societies, it can become a screening tool for identifying individuals with a very high susceptibility for carrying a mutation,? so that they can be sent on to more rigorous, full DNA mapping, Salmon said. ?In societies in which sequencing is not feasible, this test can substitute for it with a very high accuracy rate.?

The effectiveness of the test in different racial/ethnic groups will be assessed in a large study in Europe and North America, the researchers said.
