Bears D roars louder than Lions
Chicago shuts down Detroit 13-7, takes top spot in NFC North
Nam Y. Huh / APBears defensive end Julius Peppers (90) celebrates with end Corey Wootton (98) and tackle Amobi Okoye (91) after sacking Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford on Monday in Chicago.
updated 12:09 a.m. ET Oct. 23, 2012
CHICAGO - There was a big gasp going through the stadium as Jay Cutler writhed in pain on the field. He got up and the defense provided a big lift.
Cutler returned after bruising his ribs, and Brian Urlacher made a key fumble recovery to help the Chicago Bears beat the Detroit Lions 13-7 on Monday night for their fourth straight win.
It was certainly not an easy night for the NFC North leaders, particularly their quarterback, but they came away with the win after a week off and possibly buried Detroit (2-4) in the process despite getting a major scare along the way.
That happened in the second quarter when Cutler was sacked by Ndamukong Suh and ultimately wound up going to the locker room to have his ribs examined.
"He's a tough guy," Bears coach Lovie Smith said. "Most people thought Jay would get up. Unless it's a broken leg or something like that, he's going to get up. He is a tough guy. ... That was a gutsy effort by him. He was in some pain, but he fought through it."
Cutler came back to start the second half and was 16 of 31 with 150 yards and a touchdown in the game, but with the defense locking down the Lions, the Bears (5-1) prevailed. It was a huge blow for last-place Detroit, a team many expected to contend for the division championship after making the playoffs for the first time in more than a decade.
The Lions simply never got in gear, and when they had chances, they blew them. The biggest came early in the third quarter, when Joique Bell fumbled at the goal line with the Bears leading 13-0.
Urlacher recovered and Chicago hung on from there, sending Detroit to its fourth loss in five games.
Brandon Marshall caught six passes for 81 yards and scored a touchdown on Chicago's first possession. Matt Forte ran for 96 yards, and with the defense doing its part again, Chicago never really was threatened in this one.
It was a rough night for the Lions, with Matthew Stafford going 28 of 46 for 261 yards after leading the late charge in last week's win over Philadelphia. Calvin Johnson had trouble shaking the Bears' Charles Tillman and finished with three catches for 34 yards. He dropped a deep pass over the middle on the game's first possession even though he was wide open.
"Charles Tillman, that's tough to do playing against one of the best players in the league, matching up with him all night," Smith said.
The Lions lost receiver Nate Burleson to a knee injury in the third quarter on a hit by Tim Jennings after a catch.
There weren't many scares for the Bears, with one big exception.
They were leading 10-0 in the second quarter and had just taken over at their 26 when that happened.
Cutler, who had his helmet ripped off on a hit by Suh after a run last year at Soldier Field, got driven to the turf by him on an 8-yard sack. He came up kneeling and holding his head as trainers tended to him, then ran to the sideline.
Jason Campbell came in for one play, but Cutler returned right after that and threw an incomplete pass on third down before Chicago punted. But after Julius Peppers recovered a fumble by Mikel Leshoure to stop a Lions threat, Campbell was behind center. Cutler was having his ribs examined, but he was back out there to start the second half, some fans cheering as he trotted onto the field.
They were really roaring moments later when Stefan Logan fumbled trying to catch Adam Podlesh's punt. Zack Bowman recovered it for Chicago at the 27, and that led to a 21-yard field goal by Robbie Gould to make it 13-0 after Cutler had two passes broken up with the ball on the 3.
The Lions lost Burleson after a 16-yard catch near midfield on the next possession but drove all the way to the 1 before Bell turned it over. As he lunged over the pile, Henry Melton poked the ball out and Urlacher made the recovery to keep the shutout going. D.J. Moore extended it when he picked off Stafford near the goal line in the closing minutes. The Lions finally scored when Stafford connected with Ryan Broyles on a 12-yarder with 30 seconds left.
Early on, the Bears looked like a team bent on solidifying its spot on top of the division while burying the Lions.
They struck on their first possession, with Forte getting some big blocks and breaking through a hole on the left side for a 39-yard run to the 7, and Cutler connected with Marshall on the next play to make it 7-0. Gould added to it with a 39-yard field goal late in the quarter, after a 24-yard scramble by Cutler and personal foul by Detroit's Corey Williams against Earl Bennett on the play put the ball on the 21. By then, there had already been some chippiness, with players pushing and shoving after a fair catch by Logan on a punt.
It was hardly a surprise, given the way the emotions boiled over last year at Soldier Field. The Bears won that game 37-13, but the lasting image wasn't Stafford getting picked off four times. Or, Devin Hester returning a punt 82 yards for a touchdown.
It was Stafford grabbing Moore by the helmet and throwing him to the ground near the Lions sideline after Chicago's Jennings picked off a pass, setting off a confrontation between players from both sides and putting the ribbon on a heated game.

Ryan to deliver speech on helping middle class
WASHINGTON (AP) ? Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan is preparing to explain to low-income voters how he and Mitt Romney would do more to help them than President Barack Obama.
The Wisconsin congressman planned to outline the GOP presidential ticket's case during a speech Wednesday at Cleveland State University in political crucial Ohio. With two weeks to go until votes are counted, Ryan's trip to an urban campus suggests Romney's campaign is looking for any vote still available.
No Republican has won the White House without carrying Ohio.
Aides said Ryan's formal remarks would focus on upward mobility for millions of people looking for work and those struggling to get by on their current paychecks. For instance, that includes highlighting Romney's plan for more educational choices for parents and a strengthened safety net for people who need assistance.
To middle-class voters, Ryan was expected to argue that Washington is spending too much and that Obama's economic policies have not done enough to fix a struggling economy.
Ryan, a fiscal hawk and the top budget writer for House Republicans, planned to compare that record to Romney's proposal that he says would create 12 million jobs and help workers take home more of their paychecks.
Before the speech, Ryan planned to meet with civic leaders to promise that a Romney administration would work with them to fight poverty.

The College of Charleston Welcomes a Record Number of Gates Millennium Scholars
Charleston, SC ? Three College of Charleston freshmen are among 1,000 students nationwide who have been awarded the prestigious Gates Millennium Scholarship. The application process included writing eight essays each, in which the students told stories of being bullied, managing anxiety and depression, and discovering what they love to do. ?To have three Gates Millennium Scholars enter the College in one year really speaks to the quality of our applicants and to the education we can provide,? Provost George Hynd says. ?They had the opportunity to go to the school of their choice, and we?re honored they chose the College of Charleston.?
?
The Gates Millennium Scholarship is given to outstanding minority students each year by the United Negro College Fund and is made possible by a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The award is good through graduation, and recipients may request funding for a graduate degree program in computer science, education, engineering, library science, mathematics, public health or science.
?
Joseph Quisol, a scholarship recipient from Charlotte, North Carolina, says writing the essays helped him determine the subjects he likes best and led to his decision to double major in international studies and political science. Quisol is also in the Honors College and a member of the inaugural class for the International Scholars Program. He is considering a graduate program in public health and hopes to one day work for the U.S. Department of State.
?
?When I was in high school my parents had to sacrifice paying bills so I could take International Baccalaureate and Advanced Placement exams, and I didn?t want them to sacrifice more for college? Quisol says. He chose the College of Charleston because when he visited the campus, he liked the tight-knit atmosphere. ?The faculty seemed really invested in the undergraduates.?
?
?My tutor had told me to consider the College of Charleston, but I didn?t think it was financially possible,? says Kathy Longmire, a marine biology major from Vienna, Virginia. ?I come from one of the wealthiest counties in the country, but my mom was unemployed and I was looking at the possibility of going to a community college. When I found out I got the scholarship, I was in shock for a couple of weeks.?
?
In one essay, Longmire wrote about being diagnosed with anxiety and depression disorder when she was a junior in high school. ?I?ve been able to use my experience of being at rock bottom and lifting myself out of that to help others.?
?
Latisha Robinson, also a marine biology major from Columbia, SC, came to the College of Charleston along with her twin sister, Davisha. Robinson says without the scholarship, she would have to work and take out loans to ease her family?s burden of putting two daughters through college at the same time.
?
Robinson likes the College of Charleston because it is close to the coast?and to home?but says she has gained more confidence in herself over the years. In one of her essays, she recalled being bullied in elementary school. ?As I got older, I learned to open up to people and make new friends.? Winning the scholarship has taught her not to let obstacles get in the way of her goals. ?Don?t give up,? she says.

New Obama ad says Romney would ban abortion

NEW YORK (AP) ? President Barack Obama's newest campaign ad shows challenger Mitt Romney saying he'd "be delighted" to sign a bill banning abortion.
But the 30-second spot takes Romney out of context. Romney did say during a debate in 2007 that he'd sign such a bill. But what he said afterward ? that a federal abortion ban is "not where America is today" ? was left out of the ad.
The ad will air in the battleground state of Virginia.
The spot seeks to push back on a Romney campaign ad released earlier this week that says the Republican hopeful, who broadly opposes abortion, believes it should be an option in cases of rape, incest or when the woman's life is at stake.
Both campaigns are making a hard play for female voters.

Book by Sally Koslow P'99, P'04 Observes the Not-So-Empty Nest
Journalist and author Sally Koslow P?99, P?04 has written a new nonfiction book about college graduates who march, diploma in hand, back into the family home. Slouching Toward Adulthood (Viking) offers both a funny portrait and a timely study of the reasons and cultural forces behind the hot topic phenomenon of adult kids who struggle to start their careers and become independent.
The new book is informed by Koslow?s own experience when one of her college educated and unemployed sons settled back into the family?s Carroll Gardens apartment. Koslow advises, ?The best way for a lot of us to show our love would be to learn to un-mother and un-father.? Hailed by The Boston Globe as ?sharply funny,? Slouching Toward Adulthood aims to provide sensible advice to parents who can?t quite let their ?adultescents? grow up and leave the nest.
Sally Koslow is the author of four books and the former editor-in-chief of both McCall?s and Lifetime. She has written for the Huffington Post, Ladies? Home Journal, Good Housekeeping, and Readers? Digest. She lives in New York City with her husband and teaches creative writing at Sarah Lawrence College.

Essential reading: California unions fighting fundraising proposal ...
Welcome to the top tax and accounting headlines from Reuters and other sources.
?* California?s labor?s big-money focus on fundraising law may hurt chances of tax hike. Chris Megerian ? The Los Angeles Times. California?s Labor unions are pooling their money to fight Proposition 32, which would eliminate their primary political fundraising tool ? paycheck deductions ? at the same time Gov. Jerry Brown is counting on their support for his tax-hike initiative also on the ballot next month. Link??
* Why tax reform could help growth. Dylan Matthews ? The Washington Post. In large measure, what you think about the tenability of Mitt Romney?s tax plan depends on what you think his tax reform proposal can do for economic growth. Optimistic growth estimates have predicted only a mild economic boost from Romney?s proposal ? $53 billion of the $360 billion annual cost of the plan would be recouped from higher revenues that result from faster growth. Link??
* Chances of going over fiscal cliff may be higher than experts think. Jeff Sparshott ? The Wall Street Journal. What are the odds of the U.S. running off the so-called fiscal cliff ? the mix of spending cuts and tax increases that would likely tip the U.S. into recession? On average, economists in the latest Wall Street Journal economic forecasting survey put the probability at just 17 percent, but some economists and analysts say that may be too low. Link??
* Finance executives see no relief from uncertainty after elections. Emily Chasan ? The Wall Street Journal. The U.S. presidential election alone will not resolve some of the major uncertainties corporations face, such as tax policy expirations, the sluggish economy and regulatory changes, corporate finance executives say. 63 percent of finance executives expect no significant change in future business conditions and 71 percent do not anticipate making changes to their level of investment following the election, according to a poll of nearly 1,000 executives. Link??
* Gifting booms before new tax laws kick in. Arden Dale ? The Wall Street Journal. In the final months of 2012, wealthy Americans are ramping up plans to gift-away cash, stock, real estate and artwork before new tax laws kick in next year. Some have even turned to banks for loans so that they can make big gifts before year?s end. Under the federal gift-tax exemption, an individual can now give away up to $5.12 million in his lifetime tax-free. But that limit will fall back to $1 million and the top gift-tax rate will rise to 55 percent from 35 percent in 2013 unless Congress steps in. Link??
* High returns and a tax break in one investment. Conrad de Aenlle ? The New York Times. With payouts on conventional investments miserly and tax increases looming on Jan. 1, financial advisers are talking up an alternative investment that offers much greater income and tax breaks: master limited partnerships, or M.L.P.?s. These are shares of businesses that, with a few exceptions, produce, transport or store oil or natural gas. Link??
* France rules out wealth tax on art works. Hugh Carnegy ? The Financial Times. After incurring the wrath of business with a 75 percent income tax rate and jump in capital gains tax, Fran?ois Hollande?s government has quashed proposals to tax works of art owned by the wealthy following protests from France?s cultural establishment. Jean-Marc Ayrault, the prime minister, said on Tuesday the government would not accept an amendment to its tax-heavy 2013 budget put forward from within the ruling Socialist party to include all works of art worth more than 50,000 euros ($65,100)in the newly increased wealth tax. Computer and Other Hardware You Need for Online Dating - The ...
When you go out on a date, you always need some essential gear?credit cards, cash, keys, and comb, perhaps even a toothbrush. When you go online to look for a date, you will need some essentials: first and foremost, your computer. If you only plan to date via the web and email, just about any machine that connects to the Internet will do. If you want to try a real-time, instant connection method like instant messaging or an Internet phone call, you might need to install special software as well.
Chances are your existing computer and Internet connection is fast enough to let you use most dating sites. Since your web browser is going to be your primary interface, the minimal requirements are those for the current version of the most popular web browser, which is Microsoft Internet Explorer with Service Pack 1 installed: A 486MHz or faster processor, 32MB of RAM, and 12MB of hard disk space. If you want to listen to audio or attend virtual events, you will need more of each of these. These are minimal amounts; practically any other computer you purchase new will be far faster and have more storage capacity. Consider these suggestions a bare minimum.
An Internet Connection
Internet dating would be no good without the ability to view lots of photos. You might also want to chat with someone or even talk via Internet phone. You can get by with a 56Kbps modem connection to the Internet, but you?ll be far happier with a DSL or cable modem connection, which range anywhere from 200Kbps to 3Mbps in bandwidth. Consider EarthLink High Speed DSL Internet for $34.95 a month for the first 12 months ($49.95 per month thereafter). Find out more at www.earthlink.com.
A Digital Camera
A photograph, as they say, is worth a thousand words. At some point, along with typing your thousand-or-so words to a prospective date, you?ll need to post a photo of yourself on a dating site so people can get an idea of what you look like. Needless to say, you should not pose when you are having a bad hair day, and you also should put a little thought into your wardrobe selection. The quality of your photo, however, also makes a difference. It pays to take some time creating a good photo of yourself.
If you?re looking for a digital camera or other computer hardware, you have lots of options. Electronics stores like Best Buy (www.bestbuy.com) have websites, as do warehouse stores like Costco (www.costco.com). If you want to increase your chances of getting the best price around, you also might consider these two options:
- Froogle (http://froogle.google.com). Froogle is a consumer shopping service of the popular web search engine Google. It compares current prices offered by many online sellers and ranks them by the lowest price, or other criteria you specify.
- eBay (vvrww.ebay.com). The online auction giant that features individuals and businesses that sell a wide variety of consumer goods. You?ll find electronics offered in two different formats: fixed-price sales and auctions. If you are in a hurry and don?t want to compete with other bidders, look for a fixed ?Buy It Now? price either on the main eBay auction area or in eBay Stores (http://stores.ebay.com).
Multimedia Equipment
Everyone realizes that they will need to share one or more photos when they embark on the adventure of cyber-dating. You also might want to invest in some basic computer audio equipment as well, so those you meet online can hear your golden-toned voice, too.
I?m not talking about calling someone up on the telephone. I?m talking about conversing with others through your computer. Some dating sites give you the ability to talk online: You say something into your computer?s microphone, and then you listen to the response through your computer speakers. The digital information is converted to audio by means of a sound card.
Adding sound to your dating profile opens up new possibilities. It?s another layer of communication that can keep attention from wandering to a rival. In order to listen to sound files or to create your own sound snippets, your computer needs to have the following:
- A sound card. A computer card is a ?think-piece? of plastic that plugs into a special port inside your computer. Most new computers come with a sound card installed. If your computer did not, you can buy one (for example, the popular Sound Blaster cards by Creative Labs, Inc., which range from $139 to $249, and are described at http://us.creative.com/products/category.asp7cate-gory=l).
- A microphone. If your computer has one built in, you?re in luck. If not, you?ll have to buy one, but they aren?t too expensive (anywhere from $2.79 to $15).
- Speakers. Your computer may have a speaker installed, but some computer speakers are feeble. If you have stereo speakers built-in to your monitor, the quality is probably very good. If you need to buy external speakers, you can probably find them from $15 to $30.
Nerve.com gives interested participants the opportunity to meet others through an Instant Gratifier Live Video Chat. Other members who are online and have video cameras called webcams attached to their computers can see one another live. A webcam is a camera especially designed to connect to a computer; images captured by the camera can be posted on the Web so others can see them.
A site called Dating Webcams (www.datingwebcams.com) goes a step beyond this and offers a new level of interactivity. Participants in its live video chat rooms who have a special camera called CamPilot can let visitors remotely control their webcams, panning up and down, swiveling left and right, and so on.
A Cell Phone
For some people, cell phones are a way of life. Why not integrate your singles search with that part of your day-to-day activities by choosing a cell phone that is capable of sending and receiving text messages and email messages.
You may need to upgrade your account so you can do messaging and email from your cell phone. For my account with AT&T Wireless, I spend an extra $7.99 per month for text messaging and email capabilities, for instance.

Schools Should Trim Education Jobs | Education News
Lindsey Burke ? Calls to spend more on teachers are likely to come up in tonight?s debate. More likely still, we?ll hear accusations that Governor Mitt Romney wants to slash education spending by 20 percent.
This figure is a reference to the House of Representatives-approved budget, authored by House Budget Committee chairman Paul Ryan, which aims to trim non-defense discretionary spending but does not specify cuts to K-12 education.
While the House-approved budget does not specify a 20 percent reduction in federal education spending, such a move would be wise. The American public education system has shown no improvement despite a near tripling of federal spending since the 1960s.
President Obama wants to aggressively increase the amount of money taxpayers spend on Washington education programs. Specifically, he has been trying to sell the notion that the federal government must spend more taxpayer dollars to fund education jobs and that failing to do so will result in fewer teachers in the nation?s public schools.
This campaign began in earnest with the so-called stimulus in 2009, which gifted a one-time bonus of nearly $100 billion to the Department of Education. The Administration states that ?approximately 275,000 education jobs, such as teachers, principals, librarians, and counselors, were saved or created with this funding.?
On the heels of that historic infusion of cash, a year later, in 2010, the Administration pushed, and Congress passed, the Education Jobs Fund?a $10 billion public education bailout?in order to ?save or create education jobs for the 2010-2011 school year.? Education Secretary Arne Duncan argued that the funding would ?enable schools to keep an estimated 160,000 or more education jobs.?
And now, as part of his ?Education Blueprint,? President Obama has put forward a breathtaking proposal to spend another $25 billion ?to provide support for hundreds of thousands of education jobs.?
Aside from constitutional issues involving federal pay for education employees, spending billions of taxpayer dollars through Washington to prevent public school layoffs are unwise and unnecessary.
The White House often conflates education jobs with teaching positions, leaving the impression that reductions in staff rolls in the public education system will necessarily lead to fewer teachers in the classroom. While many school districts face potential staff reductions, the growth in non-teaching staff over the past five decades should inform decisions about education staffing and spending.
Teaching and non-teaching staff positions in public schools across the country have increased at far greater rates than student enrollment over the past four decades. From 1970 to 2010, student enrollment increased by a modest 7.8 percent, while the number of public-school teachers increased by 60 percent. During the same time, non-teaching staff positions increased by 138 percent, and total staffing grew by 84 percent. Teachers now comprise just half of all public education employees.
If school districts are cash poor, they should trim non-teaching staff positions?there is ample room. Removing federal red tape would help in such an effort, as a non-trivial number of administrative positions are the result of the bureaucratic compliance burden associated with the operation of federal education programs.

Recap: Detroit vs. NY Yankees | MLB Baseball | Rock Hill Herald ...
Phil Coke finished off Justin Verlander's masterpiece in Game 3 of the American League Championship Series, and the Detroit Tigers put themselves on the verge of a World Series berth with another close win, 2-1, over the New York Yankees.
A solo homer by Delmon Young and an RBI double by Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera was all the offense the Tigers needed with their ace on the hill.
Over the first eight frames, Verlander (3-0) yielded just a pair of singles to Ichiro Suzuki. Eduardo Nunez ended the right-hander's string of 23 straight scoreless innings with a leadoff homer in the ninth, and Verlander was pulled after retiring Brett Gardner on a groundout.
Coke put the go-ahead run on base before fanning the red-hot Raul Ibanez to earn his second straight save, moving the Tigers, who took a 3-0 series lead, one win away from their first trip to the Fall Classic since 2006.
Not even a lineup change by manager Joe Girardi, who has seemingly pressed all the right buttons this postseason, could revive New York's suddenly punchless offense.
Alex Rodriguez, a three-time league MVP, was benched for the second time in four games for Eric Chavez, while the struggling Nick Swisher was replaced by Gardner. Chavez went 0-for-3 and Gardner, in his first start since Apr. 17, also went hitless out of the leadoff spot.
"(New York) is a tremendous hitting team with big-time power and it's a difficult lineup to manage against. So I thought (Verlander) was absolutely terrific," Leyland said of his starter, who has allowed just two runs over 24 1/3 innings in three postseason starts.
Girardi used five relievers after starter Phil Hughes (0-1) exited early due to back stiffness with no outs in the fourth inning.
Hughes stranded four runners over the first three frames to match Verlander's sterling start, but he hung a 1-2 curveball to Young leading off the fourth. Young, Detroit's hero in Game 1 with a home run and a go-ahead RBI double in the 12th inning, lined the mistake just over the wall in left field to break the scoreless tie.
"I knew I hit it hard enough, but we weren't at Yankee Stadium, so I had to wait an extra 30 feet for it to land," joked Young, tongue-in-cheek.
Hughes followed the home-run ball with a walk to Andy Dirks and was ahead 0-2 on Jhonny Peralta when he motioned to the dugout. Girardi and the team trainer came out for a brief consultation, and Hughes was removed due to the injury.
David Phelps entered from the bullpen and stranded a pair -- two of 10 left on base by the AL Central champs.
Still, the Tigers were able to tack on a key insurance run with the help of a Chavez error in the fifth. Quintin Berry led off with a bouncer to third that ate up Chavez on an in-between hop. Berry promptly stole second and scored when Cabrera lined a double over Curtis Granderson's head in right-center.
Chavez earned some redemption an inning later when he made a nice backhanded stop on Cabrera to start a double play to get out of a bases-loaded jam.
The escape did not change the momentum in New York's favor, though the visitors did get a boost when Nunez, starting in place of the injured Derek Jeter, took Verlander deep to start the ninth.
Verlander's 132nd pitch was a weak tapper back to the mound by Gardner, and Tigers manager Jim Leyland took out his workhorse in favor of Coke rather than his regular closer, Jose Valverde.
Valverde was unable to hold a four-run lead in Game 1, while Coke threw two innings behind Anibal Sanchez to finish off Sunday's shutout in New York.
With rain falling at Comerica Park, Coke allowed a pair of two-out singles to Mark Teixeira and Robinson Cano and was down, 3-1, in the count to Ibanez, the owner of three home runs this postseason.
But after two foul balls, Ibanez swung through a curveball to end the comeback bid and put New York in a huge hole.
"Our guys put the ball in play and tried to get on base, but, you know, when you face Verlander, you know what you're up against," Girardi said. "What has happened has happened, and you have to find a way to score runs (Wednesday)."
The Yankees will turn to CC Sabathia on Wednesday, while Detroit's Max Scherzer will look to finish off the sweep. Sabathia has won seven of his eight postseason decisions with New York, but Scherzer is 3-1 in four career starts against the Bronx Bombers.

Mantel makes history with second Booker fiction prize
LONDON (Reuters) - Hilary Mantel wrote herself into the history books on Tuesday, becoming the first woman and first Briton to win the coveted Man Booker prize for fiction twice with "Bring Up the Bodies", the sequel to her acclaimed "Wolf Hall".
Two men had previously "done the double" - J.M. Coetzee who was born in South Africa and Australia's Peter Carey.
Chair of judges Peter Stothard described Mantel as the "greatest modern English prose writer", and told reporters she had rewritten the art of historical fiction.
Wolf Hall, her re-imagining of the rise of blacksmith's son Thomas Cromwell to the top of the court of King Henry VIII, won the 50,000 pound prize in 2009.
Bring Up the Bodies, published by HarperCollins imprint Fourth Estate, picks up the action in 1535 with Anne Boleyn's spectacular fall from grace and execution the following year.
"This is a bloody story of the death of Anne Boleyn and the pursuit of Anne Boleyn, but Hilary Mantel is a writer who thinks through the blood. She uses her power of prose to create moral ambiguity and the real uncertainty about political life then," Stothard said of the winner.
There could yet be a third Booker prize for Mantel. The final part of her epic trilogy, called "The Mirror and the Light", is expected to hit shelves in 2015.
Stothard, who is editor of the Times Literary Supplement, likened the character of Cromwell to Don Corleone of the famous "Godfather" film series.
"If you are looking for comparing it with things, you can see as much Don Corleone in this book as D.H. Lawrence," he said in the medieval splendour of London's Guildhall, where the prize was announced at a glitzy dinner.
"There is certainly a Godfather element to this book including, I have to say, the moral ambiguity of the Don Corleone/Thomas Cromwell figure.
"The way she uses language to make you slightly uncertain as to whether or not Cromwell is acting wrongly or rightly, or sincerely or insincerely ... is all created by prose."
NO VOTES ALLOWED
Stothard, who sought to impose rigorous literary criticism on to the judging process this year, said Bring up the Bodies had surpassed Wolf Hall, calling it "tighter".
He banned fellow judges, including "Downton Abbey" actor Dan Stevens, from mentioning books other than the six novels shortlisted for the prize and from expressing a personal preference for any of the nominees.
Stothard also prevented the five-member panel from taking the decision to a vote, saying that the winning novel was the one for which the arguments in favour proved strongest.
"We have never had a vote at any point in our long discussions," he explained. "I don't believe that art can be reduced to numbers."
His comments were seen as a rebuttal of the 2011 selection process during which judges led by former British spymaster Stella Rimington upset many within the London "literati" by stressing the importance of "readability" in their choice of winner.
Also on the shortlist this year, and joint favourite, was Will Self's "Umbrella", a modernist tale about Audrey Death, a woman who falls into a coma at the end of World War One only to be awoken decades later when Dr. Zack Busner discovers a cure.
The writer said he wanted to challenge what he called "profoundly conservative narrative fiction" with a book that critics have variously described as "sprawling", "draining" and "moving".
Up against the literary "establishment" were two first-time novelists - Alison Moore for "The Lighthouse" and Indian writer and poet Jeet Thayil for "Narcopolis".
Malaysia's Tan Twan Eng made it to the Booker longlist with his first novel "The Gift of Rain" in 2007 and was shortlisted in 2012 for "The Garden of Evening Mists".
"Swimming Home" by playwright and novelist Deborah Levy explores the devastating effect depression can have on apparently stable people, and has been described by the author as a "page-turner about sorrow".
As well as the prize money, the winner of the Man Booker prize awarded to an author from the Commonwealth, Zimbabwe or Ireland for a full-length novel written in English is virtually guaranteed a significant spike in sales.
Research by the Guardian newspaper showed that Mantel's Wolf Hall, for example, sold 35,900 copies before the award was announced and nearly 600,000 afterwards.

The International Organized Crime Industry Is ... - Business Insider
AP
International organised crime is worth 870 billion dollars, the head of the UN's office on drugs and crime (UNODC) said Monday, urging greater coordination in fighting it."We are able to quantify the cost of transnational organised crime, it is $870 billion (672 billion euros)," UNODC executive director Yury Fedotov told a crime conference in Vienna.
"But we cannot calculate the misery and suffering caused to millions of people by these illicit activities," he added.
The perpetrators are "smart, sophisticated and largely opportunistic," he said, calling for better international cooperation to tackle highly mobile organised crime groups.
Some 800 ministers and civil society representatives are attending the week-long conference on transnational crime in the Austrian capital.

Cavalcade of Stars Hits OFA Website
Obama is pulling out the big guns just in time for the second presidential debate. The president has tapped his network of celebrity supporters, releasing a slew of star-studded ads on the Obama for America campaign website.
At least five videos in the past few days have been posted on Obama's campaign YouTube channel. They cover topics including early voting, gay rights, and the importance of getting out and voting (for Obama, of course.)
Rap mogul Jay- Z, long-time supporter and friend of the Obamas , released a special wed ad supporting the president called "The Power of Our Voice." The ad which plays upon the importance of an individual's voice and vote shows clips of Jay-Z's "Made in America Festival" in early September where the rapper stood on stage as Jumbotrons of the president's face touted the success of Jay-Z and others who "worked hard, learned from their mistakes and just plain refused to quite."
The most celeb-filled ad, titled "LGBT Americans for Obama," shows vocal celebrities from the LGBT community such as Jane Lynch ("Glee"), Jesse Tyler Ferguson ("Modern Family") and Chaz Bono, touting the advancements Obama has made for the LGBT community as well as being the first U.S. President to openly support gay marriage.
Tune in to ABCNews.com on Tuesday for livestreaming coverage of the second 2012 Presidential Town Hall Debate in Hempstead, N.Y. Coverage kicks off with ABC News' live preview show at noon, and full debate coverage begins at 8 p.m.
Though the ads are sensitive in nature, displaying personal accounts of struggles as members of the gay community, a subtle jab at the president's Republican contender, Mitt Romney was not to be left out.
"You know all it takes is someone like Mitt Romney in the White House," Lynch says, "and we can roll back rights, we can lose them."
This ad is just one of five released yesterday on the official Barack Obama YouTube channel. Ricky Martin, Ashley Judd, Billy Jean King and Jay-Z have also contributed to the Obama for America-funded web page speaking about everything from bullying to voter registration.
"To me the idea of America is that no matter who you are, what you look like, or where you come from, you can make it if you try. Jay-Z did, he didn't come from power of privilege. He got ahead because he worked hard, learned from his mistakes, and just plain refused to quit." Barack Obama touts in the ad followed by Jay-Z speaking about the importance of exercising the right to vote.
This is not the first time that Barack Obama has had stars speak out on his behalf . Legendary actor Tom Hanks narrated a 17-minute Obama campaign film released in March complimenting the president's accomplishments, as did Sarah Jessica Parker.

Cisco Blog ? Blog Archive ? The Explosive Evolution of Online Media
If any doubts remained about the soaring demand for online media, the London Olympics probably dispelled them.
With 217 million viewers in the United States alone, it was the most-watched television event in history. But it also illuminated the evolving habits of online consumers. For starters, two events?the women?s soccer final and women?s gymnastics final?accounted for more online viewership than all events combined during the 2008 Olympics. Tablet computers, particularly the iPad, are driving this trend.
These kinds of striking transitions in online media consumption were top of mind during two gatherings that I attended last week. The first was a roundtable discussion of media executives in Hollywood, which I moderated; the other was a World Economic Forum Industry Partnership Strategy Meeting in New York, focused on media entertainment and mobility.
It was a privilege to be around such industry brain trusts and to share research from Cisco IBSG. Here are four core topics of conversation that emerged:
1. Yes, online video is continuing to grow at a dizzying pace. But the expected conflict between prime-time television audiences and online streaming may not materialize just yet. NBC now argues that online streaming of the Olympics failed to cannibalize its television audience. To the contrary, it drove increased interest in TV, especially considering that sports unavailable on television could be viewed online and on any device.
2. The strong potential for monetizing premium online content was of prime concern, and Cisco IBSG?s research drove some of the discussion:
- A majority (70 percent) of consumers watch professionally produced?? Internet video, with 18 percent watching more than three hours each week.
- Both streaming and downloaded video grew the fastest over the last two years; they are expected to gain at an even faster pace over the next two years.
- Consumers are seeking?and are willing to pay for?an Internet video service with quality, N-screen, and a strong library.
3. As exciting as the upsurge in online Olympic viewing is, the thought of tens or hundreds of millions of mobile consumers streaming one event?say, Gabby Douglas winning the gold in gymnastics?is sobering. It could literally break the network. Our research on usage caps for fixed and mobile services stimulated further discussion. Among our findings:
- Regarding fixed broadband, Cisco IBSG?s research indicates that in the United States, 71 percent of consumers believe that usage caps would be unfair. But in the United Kingdom, where usage caps are already in place, only 52 percent view them negatively.
- In the United States, 46 percent of consumers indicate they will reduce online video consumption after usage caps; in Canada, which has had usage caps for more than five years, 56 percent already do.
- On the mobile front, video represents more than 70 percent of traffic; however, on the iPad, WiFi traffic surpasses 90 percent. Furthermore, 80 percent of mobile Internet access is accessed in and around fixed locations, and 84 percent of mobile video occurs in and around fixed locations.
- There is a growing view that technology must evolve to better optimize bandwidth; concurrently, this need will drive greater levels of collaboration between ISPs and media/content players.
4. Data and analytics?and the ways in which precise information on consumer behavior can drive future viewing experiences?were an important topic of discussion. Much of this was centered on how these insights can greatly enhance online viewing by creating a more individualized, personalized experience (just as Amazon?s data-driven recommendations are welcomed by many consumers). However, at both events, concerns lingered about the ever-present issue of data privacy and how best to manage it. WEF has a working group dedicated to this issue, but it was of equal concern to media executives.
The myriad changes impacting the industry promise great challenges and terrific opportunities. But all of these key topics loop back to the need for new business models. Collaboration is key, as these models will need to be cross-industry and cross-player. And they must embrace multiple sources of value, including direct payment and advertising.
Regardless, it is a brave new world, and one can only imagine how online consumers will experience future events.
So, sports fans, look out for Rio in 2016!

Clever Ways To Enjoy The Fruits Of Your Jogging Efforts | Health ...
There are few things that are more effective for losing weight, overall fitness, or pure enjoyment than running or jogging. One great thing about running is that you can enjoy it practically regardless of where you live, and you can run on any surface that is safe enough to do so. Today we?re offering a couple of sound pieces of running advice, and you really should remember them so you?ll get the most out of your exercise.
When you start a jogging or running program, it?s essential to be consistent about it. Most people are really gung-ho at first, and sometimes they even go overboard. That?s when injury results and so they put running off for a few months. This is the wrong way to go about running to get fit. The best way to do it is to ease into it and keep going until you reach your goal. If you want to get the most out of your running routine, you will want to run for at least 30 minutes at a time, 3 days per week.
Don?t worry about how fast or slow you?re going, especially when you?re first beginning. The best way to do it is to start off with just a little bit at a time instead of pushing the body too hard so that you injure yourself or quit out of frustration. Make sure you never run when you are sick or hurt, but don?t mistake that for pushing yourself when you don?t want to run. If you usually have a dozen excuses for not running or jogging, such as that you?re too worn out or your schedules too busy, then you will probably quit your running routine prematurely.
Ok, when you start jogging, be sure to just start with slowly and increase your pace at a comfortable rate. Stay relaxed, don?t make your stride too long and don?t bounce too much. Always take care that you are not leaning excessively in any direction, and just keep your back and body relaxed and erect. While you can pick up a little speed after you?re warmed up, it?s usually better to jog at a slow to medium speed. Unless you are a competitive runner, you can get all the health benefits and reduce the risk of injuries by jogging at a moderate pace rather than running at full speed. People usually tend to run faster when they first start out a jogging session, so be mindful about it and keep the pace slower, and your run will be better. When you?re about finished with a run, be sure to do what airliners do and start a descent and slowing down.
Always take in some water before you begin your jog every time. If you are going to be jogging in the morning, which is the best time if you can manage it, don?t eat breakfast until sometime after you run. A little pure fruit juice is also good, but not anything with extra sweeteners, such as soda or energy drinks. Hydrate sensibly and avoid taking in too much immediately before running. If you?re properly hydrated and in good health, and you?re not running a marathon there?s really no need to carry the Gucci water bottle with you unless you?re stylish. Only drink good clean water after you?re done punishing yourself and avoid anything colored. Proper hydration can prevent all kinds of problems, especially when it?s baking hot outside. So if you want to get back in shape, use the tips we just read about and keep up your motivation until you reach your ultimate goals. Keep in mind that if you want to become a healthier person through running, you need to make a part of your regular routine. These tips will help you avoid many common problems that runners face so that you can keep running until you reach your running goal.
Furthermore, you can also use some varieties of fitness equipment like Stepper within your fitness Training, it can help boosts your physical health and fitness much easier as well as to ensure a much healthy workout in a rapid way. As long as you keep learning, you will naturally move into other areas. What matters most is that you exercise at least a few times every week.
Modifying your Exercise Programs is a very crucial physical fitness and Eric Wilcox will help you about this stuff. He will also help you lose weight and get you powerful, lean, and feeling great by using Steppers.
