Google Field Trip serves as a tour guide on your mobile phone

23 hrs.

Google's new Field Trip app is a virtual local tour guide that's always running in the background. It pops up interesting local information???from local history and architecture to the best restaurants and shopping???without you having to ask for it.

After you choose whether you want just occasional notifications or frequent ones, Field Trip runs quietly in the background, looking for anything notable around you. The app pulls in information from a ton of sources, including Zagat and Eater in the food and drinks category; Architizer for architecture; and The Worldwide Guide to Movie Locations and Atlas Obscura for unique (and possibly bizarre) finds.

When it finds something, Field Trip notifies you with a ringtone and/or vibration. It can even read the title and description to you. View the event, place, or thing on a map and read more about it within the app. You can also choose to get more or fewer notifications from individual sources.

The Android?app has a really pleasant interface and definitely encourages you to step out and go explore (as the video above suggests). Google says the app is like having a local friend with you as you explore a city. You can download this virtual friend on Google Play now; an iOS version is coming soon.?

NOTE:?If Google Play?says?your phone is incompatible, it might not really be. I got the incompatibility warning too on my Galaxy S2, but was able to download it directly from the phone and it works!

(AP) ? A tornado swept through a fair ground in a Spanish town, knocking down a Ferris wheel and injuring 35 people, while the death toll from flooding in the same southern region of the country rose to 10, authorities said Saturday.

The Friday tornado damaged several rides and cut electricity in the temporary fair set up in the main square of Gandia, according to its town hall website. It said 15 of the injured were seriously hurt, all of whom were treated on site.

Local media reported the fair in Valencia province was closed to the public at the time of a thunderstorm and that all the injured were fair workers.

Just inland from the Mediterranean coastal town, five more victims of Friday's flash floods southwest of Gandia were found overnight. They included a middle-aged woman in the town of Lorca.

Last summer Lorca was hit by Spain's deadliest earthquakes in more than 50 years, leaving nine dead.

A spokeswoman for the regional government of Andalucia told The Associated Press on Saturday that the heavy downpours and resulting high waters had claimed the lives of five people in the province of Murcia, three in Almeria and two in Malaga.

The spokesman, speaking on condition of anonymity in keeping with government policy, said that a 52-year-old British woman was missing in Almeria as well as one homeless man. Five people originally declared missing had been found alive.

Local media reported that hundreds of citizens had to be evacuated throughout the region.

The flooding disrupted high-speed train service between Madrid and Valencia and various regional lines, while bridges and roads were also made impassible.

The heavy rains which started on Friday morning are expected to continue throughout Saturday, with the front moving north toward Catalonia and the Balearic Islands.

B&N makes the Nook Simple Touch with GlowLight's $20 price drop official

The Nook's $20 price drop is more than the whim of a few major retailers -- it's Barnes & Noble's new MSRP. Following Walmart and Target's recent discounts, the company's own website is now listing the glowing e-reader at its new $119 price. The reduction is almost assuredly in preparation for Amazon's Kindle Paperwhite, as B&N's announcement makes a point of bragging about the Simple Touch with Glowlight's included AC adapter and aversion to built-in ads. See the punchy press release for yourself after the break.

(AP) ? More than 60,000 people are expected to descend upon Central Park on Saturday evening for a free concert featuring the Black Keys and Neil Young aimed at calling attention to poverty worldwide.

Dubbed the Global Citizen Festival, it also is slated to feature K'naan, Band of Horses and Foo Fighters. Video of the event is to be streamed worldwide.

The concert was scheduled around the meeting of the United Nations General Assembly in New York this week and organizers used an innovative approach to ticket distribution so that many concert-goers had no choice but to learn about an array of global problems such as polio, malaria, child mortality and clean drinking water.

Anyone wanting free tickets had to register at globalcitizen.org, which then required users to watch videos or read information about poverty-related issues. Each time material was consumed, users could earn points toward a drawing for tickets. Points were also accumulated by sharing information via Twitter or Facebook.

"Our social media campaign has been off the charts," said Hugh Evans, CEO and co-founder of the Global Poverty Project. The approach demonstrates a new model for harnessing digital tools that may be repeated for other big events with political or social messages.

Organizers said more than 71,000 people had signed up online, resulting in more than 3.5 million page views. On average, they spent just over six minutes consuming content or sharing information. Nearly 200,000 pieces of information were shared on Facebook, and just a bit more than that on Twitter. About 170,000 people signed petitions via the site, and there were 98,000 videos viewed to completion.

Evans said the project achieved its goals, set out last year, of getting more than 100,000 people to take action related to extreme poverty while telling a new story about the challenges. To that end, the site conveys information in detailed, documentary-like accounts and uses an array of video, graphics and stories that are friendly for mobile and digital consumption.

Financially, he said, the project also achieved its yearlong goal ? working with an array of organizations like the U.S. Fund for UNICEF, the Earth Institute and Rotary International ? of garnering $500 million in commitments to help fight poverty.

    So now what?

Evans said that he's hoping the audience, built online and at the concert, will continue efforts by tweeting President Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney to halve extreme poverty by 2015, which is the key U.N. anti-poverty goal. And Evans is working on an announcement in October or November about "a major rock band" getting involved with the anti-poverty efforts.

New 'Green List' shows species on path to conservation success

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) ? The IUCN World Conservation Congress has adopted a motion sponsored by the Wildlife Conservation Society and partners to create a Green List to assess conservation success. The Green List for Species would include species identified as 'fully conserved,' which are those that exist in ecologically significant numbers, interacting fully with other species in their ecosystems.

The motion was adopted at the World Conservation Congress, which was held this month in Jeju, Republic of Korea.

The aim of the Green List is to highlight species that are thriving parts of a healthy ecosystem and will emphasize that conservation is about more than just preventing extinction.

"Successful species conservation involves the conservation of a species with significant populations, interacting fully with a complete suite of other native species and processes," said WCS President and CEO Dr. Cristi?n Samper. "The conservation community should be giving to the world a positive and proactive vision of success: ?species at or near their natural carrying capacity, as integral parts of fully functional ecosystems. The Green List will be a step in that direction."

The Green List will complement the IUCN Red List, which focuses on avoidance of extinction. The Red List has been critical in assessing conservation prioritization and has been a scientifically-rigorous tool highly regarded by governments and other conservation actors. To create the Green List to reach the same level of effectiveness, the motion recommends that IUCN conducts an international scientific consultation process to develop consensus and rigorous criteria.

Dr. Elizabeth Bennett, WCS Vice President of Species Conservation, said: "The Green List represents a positive vision for conservation in the future. It is a roadmap for species to follow on the way to full conservation recovery."

Dr. Simon Stuart, Chair of IUCN's Species Survival Commission, said: "The Green List process is about optimism and success. It will incentivize conservation action and encourage investment in programs and policies that enhance and measure conservation success and management effectiveness."

Aurcana plans to start building Texas silver mine next year

    Description

VANCOUVER (miningweekly.com) ? Canadian silver minerhigh tension electrostatic drum separator Aurcana expects to begin work on its second mine, the Shafter project in Texas, next year, and will likely start production at the operation early in 2012, CEO Lenic Rodriguez said on Thursday.

The company has started putting out feelers for the $40-million that it needs to fund the project, and Rodriguez is confident the money will be in place in the early part of next year, he said in an interview at the company?s Vancouver headquarters.

If Shafter was in production today it would be the twelve-largest pure silver mine in the world and, once in operation, the mine is expected to boost the US from number-eight silver producer up to sixth place and increase the country?s silver output by 10%.

For Aurcana, it will mean production surges to more than five-million ounces of silver a year, as Shafter adds to expanding output at the company?s already-producing La Negra mine, in Mexico.

Rodriguez plans to raise $40-million to finance the project, mostly in debt, although it could include an equity component, possibly in the form of warrants.

?But we want to keep dilution as low as possible,? he said.

Aurcana had a very good reception from fund managers and investors on a recent road show trip to New York and Boston, and is planning to do the rounds in Europe soon too.

?So, the markets are opening up and I feel confident that we will be able to get this financing in place.?

Based on a June 2009 prefeasibility study, Shafter could produce an average of 3,2-million ounces a year of silver, with cash costs forecast at $7,50/oz.

Once the financing is in place the company plans to start work towards development right away, and expects production should follow within 18 to 24 months.

Aurcana bought the past producing mine in 2008 from Silver Standard Resources. The asset currently has an NI 43-101 silver resource of 24,6-million ounces measured and indicated, plus 22,8 million ounces in the inferred category.

The operation will produce silver dore bars on site, and Rodriguez said there is also a possibility the company could mint the silver and brand it as ?Texas silver?, which would create an additional profit margin.

    LA NEGRA

Aurcana is also expanding its La Negra operation, in Queretaro state, Mexico, from the current 1 000 t/d throughput to 1 500 t/d.

The expansion should be completed in the first quarter of next year, and will increase metal output to 1,25-million ounces of silver, five-million pounds of copper, five-million pounds of zinc and 1,5-million pounds of lead.

The firm is adding a new circuit for the lead, which will mean it not only escapes smelter penalties, but will also start realising revenue for the metal.

The company is putting cash flow towards the expansion, and plans to raise about $3-million in a small private placement later this year.

In June, Aurcana announced it would remove the contractor at La Negra and took over the operations itself.

Besides the savings it achieved simply by not paying a contractor every month, the company also tackled what it saw as costly supplier contracts and trimmed some surplus personnel.

?And we have really started turning that mine around,? Rodriguez said.

?It?s cash-flow positive and we expect it to be very profitable once the expansion is completed.?

All told, the operation is expected to generate more than a million dollars a month in net profit once the expansion is completed.

The La Negra mine was developed by Penoles and operated from 1970 to 2000.

When Aurcana bought it the mine had 1,2-million tons of proven and probable reserves.

After mining for two years, and without much effort in the way of exploration, those reserves now stand at 2,1-million tons.

The company will, however, start an exploration programme in November.

There are 23 known orebodies at La Negra, and many of the zones are open at depth.

?The mine?s already been producing for 30 years and we expect it to produce for us for the next ten years or more.?

Beyond the two current operations, Aurcana is also looking at some additional opportunities, both in Canada and Mexico, to ensure that it maintains a pipeline of projects.

Certain potential targets already have significant NI 43-101 compliant resources, but the firm is also considering some more grassroots opportunities, Rodriguez said.

He is hoping to see a rerating in the company?s share price as the La Negra mine ramps up and Shafter moves towards production.

Aurcana?s stock trades at just around C$0,20 apiece on the TSX Venture Exchange (C$0,23 close on Thursday).

Lessons From The Dramatic Slow-Motion Death Of Wikitravel

broken-globeOnce upon a time, in 2003, there were two entrepeneurs with a dream. Their names were Evan Prodromou and Michele Ann Jenkins, and they dreamed of a collectively edited global travel guide -- a Wikipedia for travel, if you will. So they created Wikitravel. And it went over like the proverbial "lead zeppelin." Two years later, a company named Internet Brands bought it from them for $1.7 million; pretty good money for those long-lost days before the startup craze began. And Wikitravel thrived, and lo, it was good. Until Paradise came crashing down in flames.

PST: How did Americans fare in EPL on Saturday?

    For Tottenham Hotspur

Clint Dempsey?s game-winner for Tottenham may have been the simplest of finishes, cleaning up a rebound from in front of Manchester United goal, but his first goal for Spurs was downright historic. His new club held off a furious rally form Sir Alex Ferguson?s men to win at Old Trafford for the first time since 1989.

Yes, 1989. So put on your best acid wash jeans and have a clap for Dempsey and the man who signed him, Andre Villas-Boas, who just bought himself a reprieve from the baying wolves.

Dempsey played as second forward, well beneath Jermain Defoe, often dropping way back in the midfield to collect balls and then spread them out wide as Spurs expertly exploited speed matchups out wide early.

Brad Friedel (pictured)?was in goal for the win. The parade of Hugo Lloris backers may bemoan one of the Man United goals, a sharp effort from in close that went streaking by Friedel?s right hand. But truly, he had no chance on either strike, and was sure-handed with everything else the Manchester famous threw at the visitors over the frenetic, second 45. The Lloris brigade will need to wait a little longer as Villas-Boas certainly will not dare sweeping changes to a lineup that just posted one of Tottenham?s most memorable wins in some time.

(MORE: Analysis from PST on Tottenham?s huge three points at Old Trafford)

    For Stoke City:

Geoff Cameron was once again at right back as Tony Pulis went with the same lineup that nearly did the job last week against Chelsea. Results were far better this time as Peter Crouch scored twice (on his 500th league appearance) in a 2-0 win at home. Cameron got up the wing with regularity in the first half, then settled into a defensive posture from there.

Maurice Edu was on the substitutes bench but has yet to make a first-team appearance for the Potters. He did play in midweek for the reserves in a 2-2 draw with Huddersfield Town.

    For Everton

Very little is going wrong right now for David Moyes? men, who were in command throughout (well, almost ? after an early defensive bungle) in a 3-1 win over Southhampton. By the 38th minute Everton had a 3-1 lead and were toying with the guests at Goodison Park. So, Tim Howard and his Toffees will sleep comfy tonight in second place on the table. Second. Stinkin?. Place. That is quite something for the frugal likes of ?Everton. (Oh, a big stop late in this one gives the American No. 1 something to feel even better about.)

    For Aston Villa

Recently enshrined starting goalkeeper Brad Guzan and defender Eric Lichaj will meet West Bromich Albion on Sunday at Villa Park.
